I am 58 and struggled to understand why my HR is so high, but now that I see others at my age with the same HR- my max is 176 on an all out 3 mile run with an 80 degree temp. Did it today. Now, I have been working out for years. I run 2-3 times a week, swim 1-2 times a week, bike1-2 times a week and strength train. HR slowly comes down, not to my satisfaction. I have to get a stress test done?! NIFTS, here I come!!

My kids think I am older but I haven't hit the 50+ age yet.

I put the Heart Rate monitor on for a 5K race about 18 months ago to see what HR it would read. I placed first in my AG by over 2 minutes and 4th over all out of 800 runners so I feel it was a pretty hard effort.  I got a 172 HR.  I have done the 5K test twice since then and I am a consistent 171-172. It it would have been a 10K my HR would have been higher because by the end of the 5K the HR is still climbing.

When I am killing myself on hills or speed days I see the HR up to as high as 181 BPM.  I can't hold that HR for 20 minutes though.  That HR can only be held for 2-3 minutes.

I did a 6 mile run yesterday that was an even 7:55-8:00 min/mile pace the whole way.  There were some pretty significant hills so I watch the HR monitor.  going down the big hills at 8:00 min/mi pace the HR would drop to 112 BPM.  Coming back up the big hills at 8:00 min.mi pace the HR would climb up to 145 BPM.  The average for the whole 6 mile run was 123 BPM.

On the bike I don't get my HR nearly as high.  My 171 running HR efforts is about a 151 HR on the bike for me.  Everything moves down about 20 BPM when I go from running to the bike,

I'm 58 and max is right at 168. Any serious length of time at this rate is unsustainable for me. I know I have hit 160-163 during the run portion of a Sprint Tri or the last mile of a 10K. I will say it is very unpleasant, and usually comes with post race nausea that lasts about a half hour. I reserve this pace for races where I am trying to PR.
When I train for cycling-long rides of 2 hours or more, I have to keep it between 138-148. During runs, I creep up to 150 a lot, but I can sustain this for at least 5 miles.
Funny thing, my HR ALWAYS climbs at least 12 points in both T1 and T2 of a Tri. Especially coming off bike and going to run.

I guess I should be scared. I'm 52. We did a stadium workout about 6 weeks ago. I saw 202 bpm, once.

My HR avg. for the run leg of Choo 70.3 was 164. I averaged 161 for an OLY, last year and saw 184 on the run.

No you just need to do the field LTHR test to understand what your zones are.  And 176 is not that high, that's been ~ my field test HR average and has been in all the times I've tested since 2005 (lasted tested when I was 49).  Others are lower, others are higher, it's a bell curve.

Ha, needed a good chuckle, lol

In regards to HR, I am 47 and have seen my get up to 185 pushing a hard sprint in 110*F desert heat. I eventually stopped using the HR strap last year. I started getting overly concerned I might have a problem. But as mentioned above, mine still beats just fine. Resting heart rate was in the 40's.

Been under some heavy life stresses lately, diet has been less then optimal, blood pressure and resting heart rate has gone up a tad. So I just can't worry myself about my training heart rate. I am not a professional athlete and am not looking to achieve kona gold, so I just don't fret over it.

Cheers

Im 49 years old. I have been regularly exercising with weights and walk/jog/running for about 3 years now. I am 5 foot 9. I was 94Kg starting out and now weigh in at 82 Kg. I have some modest and ancient background in weight training and soccer and rugby. I run 5K distances occasionally and other shorter runs every week and push myself regularly as far as is reasonable in the weights room 5 days a week. My max heart rate is *about* 178 when on runs but that only happens for a short time. Average for the duration is 140+. My sports watch has presented higher scores for a very short period but I put that down to spurios spikes which watches are prone to. (I got 190 today on a 4K apparently). I hope that helps.

I'm 59 and mine is right around 175. This Spring I was trying for a PR in a 10K and with the exception of the first 2 minutes of the race, it was never below 160.
The funny thing, and I know it has been mentioned, but if I do a training run and want to split it between Z2 and 3, I have to force myself to slow down. So....I periodically do HR runs, where I know the pace will really suck, or training runs, where the HR will be up. Of course, I also do intervals too. My training runs are more of a tempo run.

You know the old rule of if you can carry on a conversation? I can pretty much do this while still going at about 145-150, so not sure about that.

Here is a really dumb question if anyone wants to weigh in!!
As you get more fit, should max HR go up, go down, or stay the same?? I believe mine is about 5 beats higher now than it was when I was 56, but everything you read is that is should be going down as you age??

There seems to be evidence that as fitness increases MHR goes down.  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10688280

Pretty much everybody agrees that as you age, MHR goes down.

But what you measure as you MHR can vary quite a bit depending on other things (in addition to training, if the conclusion of the study above is correct).   For example, running tends to produce a higher MHR than biking.  Some people think that heat can also affect these tests.

49 year old male, max on the run is 189, on the bike 183. I recently did a Sprint Triathlon where I averaged 178 for 56 minutes on the bike and run legs.

I'm 40 and highest I've seen mine this year is 163. I can hardly ever get it above 160, even on hard workouts.

I register towards the high end of the range, especially for my age. In my early 50's, after the first few years of tri training, I was tested in a university lab by the prof who's name was on the lab door so it should be fairly accurate. My threshold heart rate was running about 180 and max was 190's. VO2 max was pretty high too. When I first started training I saw 200, or just over, a few times on gym equipment for whatever that's worth.

I've been slacking off for a few years and recently started some workouts again. I turn 61 in a few weeks and the gym treadmill currently registers my heart rate well over 180 within 10 minutes of starting to run. That's starting to breath deeper and sweat but not pushing too hard yet. I expect that to settle down some for simple running if I can get back into better shape. I think I could probably still push over 190 but I haven't really wanted to try that yet.
