I'm planning on doing the long course, but I haven't registered yet. I'm letting myself get intimidated by that bike ride!! I can currently climb about 3,500 feet alright but I'm not sure if I can get comfortable with those mountains in the 3.5 months left!

Join their group test rides on the course.  They have at least 3 of varying distances well before race day.  I joined one of them last year and went again on my own.  =)

I think Orangeman is gonna make me take a raincheck this year.  I was thinking about doing it again to redeem myself from last year's bonked run but will have to wait on that.

I'm a MMMaybe on this one.  If I race this year at all, it will likely be this half.

I'm signed up.

I signed up for the half - but talked to them and they'll refund me down to the Oly if I change my mind at the last minute (the whole Renegade race group is full of good people).

I plan to go on at least one of the practice rides (as the bike is where I'm currently weakest).

Dude, go on all of them and get some practice there on your own ASAP!  It's not an easy bike course.  And you gotta be smart how you manage it because you still have to run after that.  Last year's run course was mostly flat but the few ascents were killer after that kind of bike ride in the 90F+ temps.

Am I going to the correct website for this race?  www.renegaderaceseries.com ??  It appears to have been hacked since Saturday.  Or is it just me?

The site looks better now.  There was a message from "Australia" all weekend at the top of the page, and google still lists the site as potentially compromised in the search results.  I was a bit hesitant to enter any info using links from the site...

Is anyone going to the training ride this morning?

I can't make it out there by seven when the official ride is, but by coincidence I was planning on checking out the route later in the morning around 8:30-9. I'm pretty sure the water stops will be long gone by the time I come around, I'm a little concerned it's going to be hot and I will have nowhere to refill... I'll have to be careful!

Granted I would assume you're busy getting ready to head out and not surfing BT right about now if you are going...

Ha! Really?? I didn't end up making it at all. Hoping to go tomorrow. But that is NOT good planning. Were you there? Sounds like it would be a mess. Just how bad is the course?

Yeah, I noticed that which is why I skipped it.

Apparantly (according to their facebook page) - a lot less people showed up than inticipated.

I'll be at the next one - although my bike fitness is seriously lagging.

For a triathlon the bike course is demanding It IS HILLY with almost no flat ground you are either climbing or descending , no really steep grades just a series of long steady climbs with the longest (7 miles) one coming first . Its pretty much traffic free . Best to ride the course before the race to gauge effort leave something for the run .

That's what I was hoping. I do intend to check it out first, even before I lay down 200 dollars. But gradual I can do for 56 miles, steep intimidates me! Thanks!

Road surface is bigger issue than the climbing, IMO.  I did one of the first practice rides on the HIM course in 2010 and decided after that against doing the race.  Unless it has been repaired (highly unlikely...the roads in question have been like this for at least 15 years), there are cracks and potholes on the descent to the dam (which would normally be a 35-40mph descent) that I feel are a serious accident waiting to happen.  When the course was first announced in 2010, I was surprised they were using Templin Hwy, but I thought maybe work had been done on the roads since I used to shoot episodic TV up there in the late 90s.  Nope...if anything, they'd gotten worse.  There is much less bad road surface on the Oly course.  Definitely ride the courses before registering and make sure you're comfortable with them.

I need to man.  I really do.  All I've gotten in recently are trainer rides and I sold my road bike - so I'll be doing this on my time trial bike.   I'm tentative that I won't even be able to keep up with you haha

I'll PM you and we can set something up.  I was planning on doing some rides through PV hills early Saturday and Sunday up to the race (when there's no traffic) to get in shape.

My swim is fine and my run is better than ever (I did a 35 minute 6 mile run yesterday after an hour on the trainer) - so we'll see.

Is there anywhere along the route I can fill up my bottles/buy water? Looking at satellite it looks like a lot of nothing.

The first ascent is a 4.7% grade, the rest are shorter but steeper at 5% to 5.6%.  That's for the Oly.  There's at least twice more ascents for long course.  Really tough if you don't have a triple or a roadie.  TT bikes will require ALOT of mental discipline.  I advise you to take the hill training seriously here on out to prepare you well.  =)

I'll take my TT bike as well for the grind.  I've been taking it easy on my legs for the past month so my fitness level has dropped off a bit but I think I can still manage.  ITBS on left leg is much better but not completely healed yet.  Should we meet up and ride, I will use an ITBS support strap to enable me to ride virtually pain free on the tougher ascents.  =)
