Subject: mad props to the 50+ year old men
on sunday i raced in a new catagory - male, age 50-59. i know, i know, i'm a bit curvy and a whole lot sassier than most of the 52 year old men you know. i was making jokes about it before the race like the ignorant whippersnapper that i am, and i just have to say - the 50+ year old men, in general, KICK A**!

here's how i placed as a 52 year old man, as compared to how i would have done in my own age group. i would have been solidly MOP for my age, but was BOP for the 50+ men. GO 50+ YEAR OLD MEN!!!!

One of my training buddies is Mike "Iron Mike" Colaizy - he won the 50-59 AG at Buffalo on Sunday as you have listed in your table (he's 55!). He easily won the overall Midwest series in his AG last year. And now he's retired, so watch those times get even faster!! Kicking the a**es of the 20 and 30-year olds never gets boring.

Why, thank you autumn, on behalf of geezers everywhere! I find myself admiring 30-39yo women as well.

Last Sprint here locally the 50/54 winner was 19th over all out of 416 men. And less than 5 minutes behind the 27 old OA men's winner. Tough crowd. A buddy came in third in that AG with a 36:44 bike spilit over 15 miles. (which is smoking and in the top 5 OA) He was a full minute overall faster than last year and dreaded the winner's bump in AG. There were ten 50/54 Ag'ers within the next 10 minutes. Yep, no question tough crowd. And over time it is just going to get tougher and faster.

But it is nice that someone else noticed

In the older age groups, it is the people who started out with a lot of ability who still turn out to compete.   Tough crowd indeed.  If I were to race, I would want to be a 60-69 female.  I would be middle of the pack in that age group.

I had a 20-something female run by me in the 1/2 marathon at Mooseman on Sunday and she noticed the "57" on my calf and said, "I hope I'm still doing this when I'm your age...you're kicking a$$"!  I told her I hoped I was still doing it when she's my age too!

And I'm not fast by any stretch of the imagination...8th out of 11 in my age group.  Even without my flat tire on the bike it wouldn't have moved me up.

well, i have left the ranks of thr 50+ year old men. they updated my results today and i am not back MOP with the 30-39 year old women. still BOP for the race overall and for my gender overall, but at least i managed a MOP for my age group. heck, i was battling a possible DNS and then a DNF, so i'm happy with a finish on this one.

anyway, i now have a new respect and awareness of this age group. i'll be on the lookout in the future. maybe i can check how i would do against you guys in ever race i do 'yea, i placed in my age group, but YET AGAIN, then 52 year old men kicked my a**!'

I train with a 51 year old man who can kick my sad A$$ in the pool, on the bike and while running. Without even breaking a sweat. Age and treachery!!!

Whatever your age, and whether you finish FOP, MOP , or BOP just remember that there are a lot of others in your age group who have given up on exercise all together because what we do looks too tough.

Steve (41 and still somewhat fast).

i can remember back in the day when I was a roadie, going out for group rides with the local club.  The first ride I went on was towards the beginning of my career, so I wasn't too fast.  They warned me to avoid the old guy pace line.  I didn't believe it and decided that they would be the safest line to stick with and not get dropped.....  I swear these guys were recreational cat 1 riders.  "Warmed up" around 23 mph then dropped me when they hit a hill and took off.  Same thing for the running races around here.

there are two indicators to watch out for.  Age and short length.  Old guys and guys in super short shorts are the fast ones.  Stick an old guy in short shorts, and watch out.

That is my target age group.  I am totally looking forward to the day I can win in my AG, and I think this is the one!  I'm psyched!  Of course, there won't be anyone else IN that AG around here, but SO WHAT!  I'll still be out there doing it.

My neighbor is one of the top Senior athletes in the country. She's in her 70s and won 5 gold medals in the National Senior Olympics last year! I am always extremely humbled when she laps me over and over in the pool. On my bulletin board here at work, I have her picture with her medals that I cut out of the newpaper. She's my idol!

I have a friend here who is routinely the winner of her age group (often times because she is the only one in her age group). She grumbles about it. I guess there isn't much satisfaction winning something simply because you show up.

Susi Chandler from Bristol, Tn is a 55 year old lady you don't want to race. I'm 45 year old male and finished 1st in my AG last sprint. I was 23rd overall. She finished 20th overall. This is the second time she has beaten me. I have also been beaten twice by Bob Alt, a 69 year old male from middle TN.
