A Commodore 64 thread got me thinking.

First computers (I have literally no idea which came first, I got them working for the summers) TRS-80 CoCo, Ti-99, Timex Sinclair.

"You are in a deep, dark, damp jungle"
All text games, no graphics at all.

C'mon, what games do y'all remember?

I remember a text-generated game that was done with a single command. Randomly generated "asteroids" that you had to navigate through as they scrolled up the screen. We played around with it, varying the number of asteroids, the width of the field, etc... All on a TRS-80.

"It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue"

You can play a lot of these Infocom games online now... http://pot.home.xs4all.nl/infocom/

The Zork series were my favorites.  Graph paper in hand, building the map as you went along.

Guide.

All you nerds might enjoy reading the book "Ready Player One" if you haven't already.  I thought it was fantastic.

It's on my list to read.

I came into all of this a little later than most probably but I do remember several text games out there but by the time I was old enough to play they were starting to be replaced

Yes by games like Kings Quest and Space Quest.  Basically Infocom games with really bad graphics...  But I loved them when I was a kid.
