Overcast
Total Time = 1h 29m 6s
Overall Rank = 53/402
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 10/65
Pre-race routine:

Up at 6 after a bad night of sleep. Ate a luna bar (nutrition for women...helps me get in touch with my feelings) and drank some accelerade. Out the door pretty fast and got to the race site (parked at Shearon Harris Visitor Center) pretty quickly- no stress.
Event warmup:

Nothing really- just sorta walking around. Visited the port-a-potty.

Swim
  • 15m 42s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Interesting- two mins slower this year than 3 years ago! I actually don't think I swam that much slower. I think the course was long this year. It felt very long.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing- decent swim. Got kicked in the face twice and my arm grabbed once, but thats OK. Had to empty my goggles after one of the face kicks because I couldn't sight. Water temp was perfect!
Transition 1
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

Long run up from the lake to T1. Good transition- nothing fancy but nothing bad. Fastest T1 was 1:13 (Thompson) but since he flies along I dont think my transition was that bad (long run and he runs fast). This was methodical and decent.I actually put the Garmin on this time just for fun. Took all of 5 seconds and I was a little winded so dont regret this at all.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Just get faster overall.
Bike
  • 47m 56s
  • 17.5 miles
  • 21.91 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed on this one. I really wanted to get to an average of 22, but with all the turns once you come into the park, I dropped down a touch to 21.9. Should have ridden harder :-) Some of the guys who passed me were insanely fast. One guy finished in 41:19- average of over 25 on a course like this on a humid morning. Not too bad. Kinda surprised that I was 74th overall on this- I thought I was riding faster than that. Several people commented on how fast the field was today. It kinda seems that way to me as well.
What would you do differently?:

Good ride. Just need to keep training and get faster. I averaged 21.5 when I did this last (3 years ago) so a little quicker now. But then again, I have those gains back on the swim and run! Blech.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

So I had a really nice dismount and then had to slow way down as the slowpoke in front of me blocked my way! FAstest T1 was 0:39, then 0:44 was second, so not a bad T2. Just methodical. No brain freezes!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Run
  • 22m 41s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Phew, struggled on this one. The humidity really hurt me. I got passed by 3 guys in my age group and despite my thoughts of reeling them in the last half mile, I didnt have anything to reel them in with! Three years ago I got 21:30 in this race, but the route was 2.95 on my Garmin. This year they seemed to add a loop at the end which made it 3.14 on my Garmin, making the pace about the same if you account for the difference in distance.
What would you do differently?:

Get fitter. This felt way harder than it should for the pace I was going! I contemplated walking a lot and nearly did at one point. That would have been lame. Glad I didnt.
Post race
Warm down:

Milled about chatting to various people.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just fitness. Didn't mess anything up or leave much out there at all.

Event comments:

A little disappointed with my time- really wanted to beat my time from 3 years ago, but I think the swim was long and the run was definitely a little longer. I did relatively poorly in my AG (10/64, compared with 8/108 last time) but I think part of that is the caliber of the crowd that showed up this time. For the first time ever I beat Andrew. Not sure if he is not in good shape and he looked broken at the end, but fun to beat a known entity that is typically a couple of mins faster. I'd be very interested to see the USAT scores since those take into account people's previous race results in the calculation.

Interestingly, I would have been 7th in the 35-39AG...10th in the 40-44. Tough bunch. Turns out that 61 seconds faster would have gotten me 5th in my AG! Now I just need to find that minute somewhere. Quite a densely packed bunch in the end between 4 and 10.

Not a bad rac there. I am suprised you were only something like 74th on the bike. a hair under 22mph on that course is not slow, so the people must have showed up for this one.

Nice race, man! Fast time on the bike! You were really flying! I'm surprised you were that "low", too...with that kind of split, you're probably top 40 at most sprints...

Great job overall!

You're steamrolling towards B2B!

My husband likes my girly Luna bars, too. Keeps his hair shiny and lustrous.

Why is this called a triangle tri? I thought it was a little funny 'cause the swim course was a rectangle. Shouldn't it be a triangle?
