Pre-race routine:

Still trying to recover from a torn soleus and a broken toe, I decided to change my registration from the Half to the Olympic, and play the race by ear. Made a family event of this! Drove 700 miles up to Portland on Thursday. Loooong drive! Friday, Jeff & the boys went golfing with my cousin, and I hung out with the rest of the family. Met kkcbelle and her hubby for a great dinner - with wine! NEXT time we'll get her kiddos!

Saturday we did packet pick-up, and signed a bunch of forms so that Zach (my 16 y/o) could race the HIM. Not only was this his first, HIM, turns out he was the only teen in the race. This was setting up as a duel between him and his dad.

We drove the course with Kyla - holy frijoles. Never been so glad to have backed off from a race. That bike for the Half was brutal. Hilly, windy, technical, and not closed to traffic. While my course looked great, I was REALLY worried about Zach (and Kyla & Jeff, everyone looked a bit green!) We hit the ahtlete meeting - heard all of our reminders about USAT rules, listened to the pros talk about how otugh the bike course was going to be....and headed off to find food. Jeff and the boys all had foot-longs, Kyla and I restrained ourselves! Met my family for a big barbeque, and called it an early night!
Event warmup:

Tyler (our non-racer) dropped us off at the park at 6:30. Such a great venue - and very casual. Set up our transitions, met Kyla and Julia, and continued to worry about Zach. We all headed down to the beach, and tried to figure out where the heck we were swimming. 3 waves of Half-ers - Kyla, Jeff then Zach - Julia and I cheered for each one! Then it was our turn, and we were off!
Swim
  • 35m 30s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had a lot of clear water. Only one contact - and unfortunately, it was the bad toe. That hurt - and dislodged my wrapping. After that, it was a smooth easy swim - one of my best. Passed a few swimmers in earlier waves, that's always fun. Did think the course was long, and heard that from others, too.
What would you do differently?:

Protect the toe better.
Transition 1
  • 03m 14s
Comments:

May be one of my best T1s ever. Hard running up the beach, stairs and grass with the toe-tape off, but I got my wetsuit off quicker than ever before. Skipping the gloves really helped too. Missed the mimosa, though.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 1s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.40 mile/hr
Comments:

Very flat course. Pretty riding along the river, but not a lot of variety. Bad roady constuction out by the turnaround, and even though we were warned at the athlete meeting, several men cheated and rode on the wrong side to stay on the new pavement. Annoying as heck, and I called a few of them out on it. Being in the last wave, I passed more than I got passed, and that's always fun.
What would you do differently?:

Be in better shape? This should have been faster!
Transition 2
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Dang, but this was good. I moved fast!!
Run
  • 1h 03m 44s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Started the run off with my toes hurting-way more than I expected. Seriously considered bagging the whole thing. Instead, I walked. A lot. Frustrating, my calf felt fine - toe stunk. Felt very fat and tender. Ah, well. Got to see the pros on the bike finish, and then out on the run. THAT was fun. I cheered 'em all on - and most cheered right back! Finally saw Jeff, and then Zach on the end of their bike. HUGE sense of relief! Turns out Jeff flatted shortly after I saw him - major bummer.
What would you do differently?:

Not break the toe.
Post race
Warm down:

Fun finish chute. Found just enough oomph to finish with a run. Made it over to T2 in time to see Zach come through, and find out that Jeff was only 6 minutes behind him. the announcer talked about the 'family battle shaping up' on the run, and he announced when Zach passed Jeff at about mile 11. This was right about when I got to do the podium thing - gotta love small races!!

Zach came racing down the chute....with the announcer cheering him on. They had Zach wait and give Jeff his medal 1:30 later. Pretty darn cool.

Not too much later, watched Kyla storm the finish line! Woohoo!

Pretty amazing race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

hmmmm. Soleus. Toe. Fitness.

Event comments:

Had SO MUCH FUN. Then had to drive 700 miles home......

I soooo loved that you guys were there and had so much fun hanging out with you!! I hated that you couldn't race the half (and share the gnarley bike course with me, ha!), but was glad you still got to run a race. Get that gosh-darned toe healed up and get back at 'em!!! Huge congratulations again to both Zach and Jeff. Your family is beyond awesome. Great matriarch you are!! Awesome weekend. Congratulations to you too -- you are such a tough cookie!!!!!
