I have a friend that lives in Albuquerque that tried to order Atlanta Olympic Tickets over the phone and was told by the operator that they couldn't take his order and that there was a separate international number for New Mexico.

I also vote culturally ignorant.

It's just like when I tell people my sister-in-law is from Taiwan and they say "Oh, I love Thai food!"

I also vote culturally ignorant...I don't think she was being insensitive...I think she heard Thai and thought he said Chai and she probably doesn't even realize there is a difference.  I didn't know what Thai tea was until sometime in the last decade...

^^^ More of that.  I am Asian, and I didn't know Chai tea is Indian.  heheh.

But getting into an arguement?  Accept the misunderstanding, learn a new thing and go to Starbucks to get the Chai!

I'm half Asian and I didn't know Chai was Indian. But if I'm at a Thai restaurant and I order tea, I'm ordering Thai tea. I get flustered when I'm in a Japanese restaurant and I order tea and it's brown, not green. I'm all `Ya'll a buncha posers!' and then I dance like a Japanese man right out the door, while singing karaoke and taking pictures.

video please

Three points:

1) OP- Probably cultural ignorance, although once corrected, arguing the point is lame.

2) BTW, Indian and Thai cuisines are not dissimilar. I cook both and there are many common ingredients and techniques.

3) The best karaoke I ever saw was an octogenarian Chinese man singing Chinese opera at a restaurant in Chinatown in Montreal.

True. But Thai tea and Chai tea are very dissimilar.

And hope you don't get Chia Tea. That'll put hair on your chest. Or head. Or wherever you spill it!

I know back in the 80's I was flying somewhere and the flight attendant asked if I would like something to drink.

I asked here if I could have a look at her TWA tea and she got real mad and left.   Which stunk, because I was thirsty.

But that's the only trouble I've had ordering tea.

This thread, for some reason, reminds me of the scene in the Godfather where Michael has the meeting in the restaurant to assassinate the cop and the family head. The cop is Irish, and they are in an Italian restaurant in an Italian neighborhood, and he says "how's the Italian food in this restaurant?"

I grew up in Santa Fe NM.  This sort of thing happened frequently, from being asked what it was like to live in a foreign country to "I am sorry we don't ship internationally".   Now you know why The Manhatten Project was located in Los Alamos NM.

When we were on the college tour circuit, one of the dad's told us about his daughter asking at Duke "So, is the football team good here?"

Having lived many years in S.E. Asia and India I now find Thai & Indian food are staple necessaties. But now I live in rural Ontario, and there are no Indian and only one Thai restaurant within driving distance. My favorite comments overheard at this local Thai eatery

3.  I don't want any raw fish in my sushi.

2.  Where are the fortune cookies?

1. There ain't nuthing weird in this like dog or cat? (this was from a teenaged girl)

Overheard in my house recently:

Me to the wife: "Do you want Chinese food tonight?"

The 6yo: "Yay, I want a fortune cookie!"

Me to the 6yo: "We won't get them.  The restaurant is Malaysian."

The 6yo: "What?  You said Chinese."

Me to the 6yo: "Go to your room."

Around here (Greater Boston area), many restaurants serve a mix of different cuisine.  A sushi place may be owned and operated by Thai or Chinese; many restaurants advertise their "Chinese/Japanese/Korean" menus which serve nothing authenic; Malaysian place serves Vietnamese dishes etc.

I am Chinese, and frequently I am confused.

Yeah, white folks like to call that `Asian Fusion' ... when we just call it `The crap mom had left in the fridge at the end of the week.'

Even more confusing (and I think to the point of the OP who thinks it is "culturally insensitive" to ask for chai tea at the Thai restaurant) are all the chinese restaurants around me that serve sushi. I expect sushi at the japanese restaurant. I still don't think about it when I order my chinese take out. Then when I go pick it up, I say "D'oh! I could've had some sushi, too!"

Also my hometown. Most of us that grew up in NM have these kind of stories. From being asked if we had indoor plumbing to someone asking me of they needed a visa to enter, I was always amazed at what sort of image people could conjure up about what NM is really like.
