So what keeps you going when your body says it's time to quit? I have a few mantras that I pull out when needed, but was wondering what other people use to stay motivated.

"If this was easy everyone would be doing it."

"It's not supposed to tickle."

"This too shall pass."

I don't always have a mantra in every race but seem to have one in the races in which I exceed my expectations.  That said, every time, my mantra has come to me that day and has been very organic to the day.  Any time that I've gone in to and/or started a race with a mantra it has not stuck through the race nor has it helped me.

I don't suspect that I'm the norm when it comes to mantras.

I spent an entire weekend  last year watching the Ironman Championship narrated my Mike Rowe.  Every time I get tired on a hill or on that last mile I remember all the biographies of the handicapped triathletes, whether in a wheelchair or Lupus or ALS and I think if they can do an entire Ironman then I can finish this paltry 7 mile run or 20 mile bike and just shut up about it already.

I stole someone else's mantra.

"When your legs give out, run with your heart."

During training it's "HTFU cupcake"

During a race, it's "run to that tree.. ok, run to the next light post.. k, now run to the next bush..."

For training, on those days I just don't feel like training - I remember something I read on BT (can't remember who wrote it to give them credit)

"I never regretted doing a workout, but I have regretted NOT doing a workout"

I also like to say "I take what my body can give me on any given day" (not sure that is motivating, but I like it)

For racing "You are NOT a quitter" "HTFU" "only ____ miles to go" "OMG this hurts" "I want my finishers medal"  "OMG this hurts" "OMG this hurts, what was I thinking?" "OMG, this feels great!"

During training, i just tell myself that this is optional and that i can quit any time. Somehow, giving myself permission to quit helps me keep going.During a race, I go the organic route also. My last two races were the 'Jungle Patrol' song that the elephants sing in Disney's 'The Jungle Book' and 'Put One Foot In Front Of The Other' that old man winter sings in one one those Christmas claymation movies. Yes, I have a four year old, but don't know that that's an excuse for the song selection. Twomarks

Training: "It doesn't get easier, you just get faster." - Greg Lemond

For races:

During the swim: "slow is smooth, smooth is fast"

During the bike: "enjoy the suffering"

During the run: "one more mile."

I don't have a mantra, really, but when it's time to dig deep in a race I start counting my steps. Just 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 2,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 etc.

This keeps my mind clear, focused, and able to detach from (most of) the pain. Sort of like occlumency for triathlon
