So my legs could keep going, my lungs feel fine (not out of breath), but my stomach is always the first to say stop when I'm running. It's not cramping, more like I feel like throwing up when I go too hard (never have tho). I always wait 3 hours after eating before I run, then drink gatorade 10 min before I go. The gatorade has actually helped lessen the feeling, I used to run on nothing. So is this normal? I would think that I'd run out of breath first. When I slow down it goes away.

You're overexerting yourself. Slow down and run at a comfortable pace. If you don't feel like you're working hard enough, go longer. Either that, or do fartleks (where you run very fast for a short distance during your run). Check out the signs of heat exhaustion and make sure you aren't pushing yourself towards that.

Good luck.

I agree with the previous - I have done the same thing at races, when I take off too fast and get my heartrate up to high. Have you tried monitoring your heartrate? If you don't have a monitor, you can get a rough idea by the little monitors that they have on treadmills (if you work out at a club). My latest game I play with myself while on a treadmill is to try to guess what my heartrate will be - with some practice, you can ususally get pretty close.

Good luck,

Dennis

I have this happen all the time. Usually it is at the end of a run/race, when I try to push to the finish. All that works for me is to bring the pace down to a level my stomach can live with. I try to take it as a sign that I am working as hard as my body will allow.

Same deal for me.  I used to run the 800m race in high school and would either dry heave, or vomit after every race since I about killed myself running those 2 laps!  Lower the exertion and see if it makes any difference.

Unfortunately, for some us this occurs all too often irregardless of exertion level. Look at what you are eating and experiment with different foods. Acidic and foods that leave you bloated can be problems. Like the rest of your nutrition, experiment while training not race day. Good Luck!

This may or may not help you, but I find when I run over about an hour - shorter times, I don't have issues. Longer training, especially on the run that I have to add some electrolyte stuff to water in order not to get nauseous. I came to this solution after trying a few different things. If you're running under an hour at a time, then I agree with the effort comments. If you're running over an hour at a time, this is what worked for me.

First, I stay hydrated - I try to drink when I feel thirsty, whether a couple of swallows or more, depending on how I feel.
Second, I use water mixed with one to two scoops of Endurolyte Powder by Hammer.

I sweat a lot when I run, and it's by far the hardest sport for me. Before I started doing this - my stomach would hurt, and after the run I would be cold and almost have the shakes. Getting the endurolytes back in the bloodstream is what turned the trick for me, so I could go out and run for 2 hours and not feel like death afterwards.

Thank you all for the advice. I tend to think that it's overexertion now... but I've noticed a difference when I stay hydrated, so I'll be sure to keep doing that as well.

Cuda--It's funny that you should post this. I just received my first copy of American Tri (very excited!!) and they had a little article about this. Now, I actually can't remember too much about it as I don't suffer from this condition, but I'm posting so that I'll remember to post about it when I get home.

But what I can remember is that this... disorder whose name I can't remember... is very common with endurance athletes. So you shouldn't be shocked. I'll give you the deets later.
