Sunny
Total Time = 1h 30m 32s
Overall Rank = 251/1067
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 18/52
Pre-race routine:

Special K for breakfast, loaded Jeep and headed for Boulder. Had to hang around at start for wave to depart (25 minutes after start). Fired up some Argentinian M&M's, a bottle of Ensure, and half a sugar free Red Bull. Yum.
Event warmup:

Very short little warm-up swim. Stood around on a little dock talking with folks whose nerves seemed pretty high.
Swim
  • 15m 34s
  • 805 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started in middle of pack. That worked fine. Swimming into sun was a bit of a challenge on the way out, but not too much of a problem. Water tasted delightful, and I drank a lot of it.
What would you do differently?:

Might make sense to look into a sleeveless wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 01m 55s
Comments:

Thankfully it was pretty easy to find the bike in transition.
Bike
  • 48m 40s
  • 17.2 miles
  • 21.21 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt surprisingly good on the bike. This was a good pace for me. Passed a lot of folks and moved up in the waves pretty well.
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

At this point just a bit confused and kept thinking I was forgetting something. Odd, because I really didn't need to pack a suitcase for the run, or anything.
What would you do differently?:

Stop worrying, start running.
Run
  • 23m 40s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

This bad boy was cooking. It was thankfully a short run, but nobody was laughing....
What would you do differently?:

I would have run faster. I think that I still had something in the tank.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a bottle of water and wandered around aimlessly.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Unsure of course. Inexperience.

Event comments:

Frankly, Barry puts on an amazing race. This event sells out at around 1,200 participants, and it's not too big of a surprise because it's so well run. Plenty of cheerful volunteers. Course very clearly marked. This is really how they should all be run! It's really a great experience.

Talk to me about the ensure.  My wife started drinking them when she was pregnant - I guess they're loaded w/ all kinds o' vitamins and stuff - and she still keeps them in the 'fridge from time to time.  What kind (adult, kid, pregnancy....), flavor preference, etc?  Are they "agreeable" w/ you system?  Never thought of these, but I guess it makes sense.  Do tell, please.

Nice race!!! There were a lot of BT'ers up there doing this one today - wish I could have been one of them.  I enjoyed reading your report - Your transitions WILL get faster with this tri under your belt.  I just wish I could swim/bike/run half as fast as you.

Nice race!!  We probably crossed paths somewhere on that damned run - damnation run, or dam run - however you want to look at it, but you're right, it was pretty dang hot out there!   But it looks like you pushed through it pretty well   Great job!

Nice race yesterday! On my way in from the run I was thinking about the heat and how I was glad I was in the 2nd wave since it was gonna be a burner for the late waves! Looks like you still had a good time though.
