In the spirit of non-political movie threads, I went to see this last night at the IMAX 3D. Seeing it in the middle of the week was the way to go - I had a semi-private showing (I think there were maybe 6-7 other people there) with no annoying kids at the Disney movie.

I thought it was a really good movie. I liked the call-outs to the other classic horror movies - Godzilla, Bride of Frankenstein, Wolfman, the Invisible Man, The Mummy, Dracula, Gremlins, as well as the visual references to the classic Frankenstein. I thought Sparky really came to life (so to speak) as a dog - watching him play by himself in the yard with a ball was exactly like my dog Waffles playing with a ball. Burton really held the beats for the dog's dying long enough to really make you feel bad (well, it made me feel bad - I kept thinking about my last dog who died in January) before returning to the kid movie ending.

He also had some sharp things to say about the anti-intellectual/anti-science streak that tends to run strong in parts of this country - through the speech of the science teacher at one point. At the same time, he clearly indicated the importance of having some connection emotionally with the world to be an effective scientist (as opposed to the mad scientist).

Of course, I like Burton's style. I think this was similar in feel to Corpse Bride, where the pain of loss is so much a part of the story.

I saw it too. I thought it was just ok, although I did like that they didn't sugarcoat the death of the dog. They showed the kid’s anguish and the helplessness that the parents felt in trying to comfort them. Kids’ movies usually shy away from that and I appreciated the way they went about it.

It was kind of a middle-of-the-road movie for me. Some “intense” parts, but nothing really scary, a few chuckles but nothing wildly hilarious, and nothing spectacular visually.

Is this a sequel? Wasn't there already a movie where a kid reanimated the dog? Maybe I saw the trailer a  l o n g  time ago and thought it would had been out by now.

Burton's expanding on a short he made in I think 1984. It's hard to find a copy of the original short, but I have it - it's available on the anniversary edition re-release of Nightmare Before Christmas.

I read someshere that he was working on a full length version and disney backed out. He took what he had already done and made a short of it.

Flash forward and after becoming more bankable thanks to Johnny Depp he was able to more or less write his own ticket.

I think he made the original as a short. It was a little dark for Disney at the time (and so they fired him for wasting resources and money), but now that he has made his name, they allowed him to make it the way he wanted.

Here is the original. It can be hard to find sometimes, since Disney keeps taking it down when they find it, for copyright reasons.
