Subject: number of workouts per sport each week?

One of the hardest aspects of triathlon, I think, is just the logistics of fitting in the required workouts around your schedule.  Also, knowing that by participating in triathlon, you're sacrificing potentially getting really good in one sport in order to get pretty good in three.  I really struggle with that second point.

My schedule comfortably supports 9 workouts per week.  I simply do 3 swims, 3 bikes, and 3 runs each week.  Is this the recommended approach?  I would consider myself strong in the run, mediocre on the bike, and poor on the swim.  How many of each sport per week do most people consider adequate?

I'm no coach, but 3/3/3 seems to be a common theme in many beginner plans I have seen.  Maybe a 3/3/4 if you are trying to work on a particular discipline.

But I have noticed that taking it to the next level is usually 12 workouts a week 4/4/4 for a balanced approach.

I was following a "survivial" plan for this IM and it was T/TH/Sa ride, and W/F/Su swim and bike.  Maybe a brick thrown in every other week.

I vary throughout the year. I am a swimmer, decent on the bike and weak on the run. Starting next week, I will be doing 5 run / 2 swim / 3 bike for a few months.

I am very similar to you and about 9 workouts a week is a good average with one total rest day/ week but am concentrating on the swim right now so I do 4 swims 2 runs 3 bikes in week one and then 4 swims 3 runs 2 bikes in week 2's rotation as spring rolls around I will start to do a couple of shorter bricks with bike run combo's on the Bike or run days Usually on the weekend and I add a OWS, run combo midweek once the water gets warm enough to swim in with a wetsuit.

I think the 3/3/3 or even 2/2/2 structure is how most people start out.  But as you get used to your training schedule, you often find little pockets of time where you can sneak in additional training.  Especially when it comes to running since logistically it's the easiest for most people to do.

I suppose I could easily add a couple of miles on the treadmill after every bike trainer workout since it's right there next to the trainer.

I tend to short-change the swimming because I do fine on the swim with very little training, so spend that time either biking or running. I tend to only swim 1 or 2X/week but tend to split the remaining workouts between running and biking (roughly equal, depending on what the next event is) because my relative gains are likely to be there. Obviously with limitless time I would prob do at least 3 swims a week and 4 runs/bikes each, but I'm a lottery ticket and 3 kids short of limitless time. :-)

Dude, judging from your avatar, your swimming pool is right next to your bike too, so just get off the bike, ditch the oxygen tank and swim Cool

That reminds me.  Any success riding underwater?  Mythbusters JUST did a test on that.

I do interval swims on Wednesday & Friday, and a long swim on Sunday

I run 6-7 days a week...2 mile "recovery" runs on my days where I don't have a run scheduled. (Mon., Tues., Fri.) And I have scheduled "short" runs on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday with my longer runs on happening Sunday.

I ride my bike anywhere from 20-40 miles on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and have my long ride on Saturdays.

It was difficult, but possible.  The dive master told us there was a bike somewhere down there.  When I found it I just had to try.  Hardest part was that the front end kept wanting to come up.  This was before I was into triathlon, so I had all my weight rearward.  Now, if I had tried to get aero...or should that be hydro?

Until I'm entranched in a specific plan for upcoming race, my weekly ratio is largely dependent on injury management.  My intended off season was 4-5 runs per week, 2 swims, and 2 bikes.  With a few running related aches that has shifted to 2-3 runs, 3 swims, and 3 bikes.

During the season I hope to be at 4-5 runs, 3 swims, and 3 bikes.  The key to my success in definately the run and is where I continually try to focus.

Work 40 hrs/week, second shift. Great schedule for training!

Sunday: long ride

Monday: am swim/ pm short fast run

Tuesday: am swim/ pm spin

Wednesday: am swim/ pm run 35 minutes

Thursday: am swim/ pm spin

Friday: am 90 minute ride/ off pm (awesome)

Saturday: am long swim/ pm long ride

My pm workouts are usually not longer that 45 minutes.

I'd love to run more, but I'm trying to protect a bad knee!

Was this bike on the Indra wreck off of North Carolina? Every 4th of July a local dive shop has a underwater bike race on the deck of the wreck and leave all the bicycles on the bottom. I like to ride them off the side of the wreck (30 foot jump). I need to put some hydro bars on the bike.

Swim- 1

Bike- usually 6, sometimes 7

Run- usually 7, but I think over the winter i'm going to cut back to 5 for a bit.

I started at 3/3/3. Eventually, it moved to 3/4/3. Then I dropped a swim, and went 2/4/3. And then 1/5/3...eventually I quit swimming, and switched to dus.

Now, my normal week in-season is 6-9 rides a week, 3 runs, and 2-3 ellipticals (or pool runs). So 11 to 15 a week, all bike and run (or run-ish).

AM trainer ride 5 days a week with a long ride on Sunday; lunch is always my run (or ET). I will also ride after work a couple times a week during peak training season..often that is a MTB ride.

For me personally, and my athletes, it varies by the training period, athlete's goals, strengths and weaknesses. A strong swimmer who is a weak runner may be 2 swims, 3 bikes, and 4-5 runs during a build period. The same person may be 1 swim, 2 bikes, and 5-6 runs during transition (base) period. A strong runner / weak swimmer may be close to the opposite of those numbers, only I never have an athlete drop below 3 runs per week, to maintain some durability for the sake of injury prevention.

(Very weak) swimmer here and don't have access to a pool, so running mostly and will start adding biking soon.  So, right now it's 3/0/0, will be going to 4/2 or 3/0, but hopefully, by week 10 or so this first round will be at 4/3/3 once I can convince my wife into getting us back into the Y membership.

As I train for my first 70.3 my schedule looks like this:

3x swim - 3x bike - 6x run

I get my swim workouts in during lunch.  My runs follow the BarryP 1-2-3 plan and my bike rides are all on the trainer (with trainerroad and sufferfest).

I suppose I should start using the logs here on BT again.

IM specific plan starting in March - 3x swim, 4x bike and 4x run

I'm rebuilding the run from injury.  I just started the Barry P 3-2-1 plan 3 weeks ago.  So that's only 15 mpw with 6 runs.  I currently do 3 bikes but getting ready to start Jorge plan so I guess that will be 4 bike.  I do 2-3 swims/week.  I'm not a great swimmer, but have the least access to a pool.  I go as often as I can get in with the limited hours my pool offers.  It's only open 12 hours/week.

Currently I'm running every day but usually I'd do each sport 3 x a week with one of those being a long ride, and a long run.  Bike is my weakest so if I'm gonna do 4 x that's what I pick to add to.

When the weather's good I'll throw in some extra OWS
