Subject: Shallow or Deep Pool?

I currently have the option between two different pools where I typically swim, and I want to know your opinion on which pool you would use.

1: A 25 meter "instructional" pool. 3 feet deep at one end, and 5 feet deep at the other.

2: A 25 yard "race" pool. 6 feet deep at one end, and >9 feet at the other.

Both pools are adjacent to each other and both typically have the same number of lanes and same amount of people using them.

I tend to use the 25 meter shallow pool more. Mainly because I like the extra length. I also like the ability to stand at the end between sets to allow my body to better relax so I can give more effort to my sets. When I swim in the deep pool I'm either treading water or hanging onto the wall between sets which just tires me out quicker, ruining my form, and leading to a less effective workout.

Which would you choose?

I would use the 25m pool because of length. I could care less about the depth.

I would pick the 25m pool because that's what I'm used to for pace times.  I would probably actually prefer a deeper pool but again, that's what I'm used to.

I'd prefer the shallow pool to make sure I puke outside the pool.

There are five 25 yard or 50 meter pools within 1 mile of my house- blatant brag. And an open water swimming lake 2 blocks away and the ocean 12 miles away. It's good.

I like deeper water for swimming. I'm not sure why.

Somewhat interestingly, there was a theory that pools for world record competition had to be over some specified depth- not sure what that was- to prevent "shock waves" traveling through the water from the swimmer reverberating off the bottom and hitting the swimmer again producing a propulsive effect (!).

Deeper pools have more water.  If you pee in a deeper pool, it should dilute more so it is less likely that you will drink it on the return lap after your flipturn.

I was a member of a 25 yard 4 foot deep pool and a 25 yard 9 foot pool. I prefer the deeper pool. If others are swimming in the shallow pool I would get bounced around a little bit and I feel faster in the deeper pool. Probably just a preference thing.

In 3 feet depth my arms touch the bottom when doing freestyle.

The race pool (the deep one) is kept at 80F, the other pool doesn't have anything listed but I've never noticed a difference between them.

I think you should switch it up a few times and see if you prefer one pool over the other. My regular pool is 50m and 6ft deep at the shallow end. I like both longer and deeper so I'm not sure which to pick over the other.

I have hit my back on the bottom of the pool while turning in a 3 ft pool. Obviously poor form on my end.

Same same but different. I would use one or the other, but not both. As mentioned if you're used to 25m and know your pace then it's really preferable, but the difference in length doesn't matter that much.

Regarding depth, 3ft is shallow if you're doing flip turns (yeah, here it is the flip turn discussion Smile).

Most pools I've been to have a small shelf at about 5ft depth you can rest on, but you still need to hold on to something. An arm on the lane rope is usually sufficient also, no need to tread water.

I'd choose the one the old ladies are NOT in.

Try them both. You may find you have a preference. Ultimately you want to pick the pool that will enable you to do the most swimming.

True. gutter systems are basically infinity pool edges so all waves flow out but not back. Depth is usually at least 7 feet. The ones you see on tv are deeper. Keeps the water as still as possible. pump/circulation systems are designed to minimize any currents or turned off completely during competition.
