I have a compact crank (50/34) and a 12-25 cassette.  What are your thoughts on owning more than one size cassette?  Do you ever swap out cassettes to match your course?  If so, what is a good set of sizes to own?

I own an 11-23 a two 12-25s (kinda wish they were an 11-25) and a 12-26.

Whether or not you need a full collection depends on you and the kind of riding and racing you do.  I use my 12-25s for almost everything, but have thrown the 12-26 on my tri bike for races with big climbs because its a standard... and I'm just not that manly.

I have an 11-23 for short, flat courses, 12-25 for "average courses" and a 12-27 for hilly courses like American Triple T and several IM courses.

I have a couple of 11-23's which is for flat races, a couple of 12-25 that is really my all-round choice and also on my training wheels and a 13-26 that I use in early season when we hit the mountains.

54/42 up front. Most Used Cassettes: 11-23 & 11-28

Trainer: 11-21

Others: 12-23, 12-25

Yes, I swap out to match the course, always think of that. What's "good" depends on both the rider and the terrain.  11-23 gets the most use and the 11-28 is for traveling to a hilly area. I don't bother with something in the middle because it's only the bottom few gears that change anyway.

I switch between an 11-23 for flatter rides and an 11-28 for pretty much everything else.

50/34 up front, 11-28, 12-25 and 12-27 on various wheels.  No idea how to swap them out, something I'd like to learn.    Will do 90% of my racing with the 11-28 next year.

For htis mid 50's long time rider:

Shimano 13-14-15-16-17-18-19- and 21-23-25  or 21-24-26 SRAM cogs  or long ride  (75+ miles) with plenty of hills 21-24-27

all with a compact crank.  Nice single tooth cog changes with no missing 18 tooth cog to enhance shifting.  Can ride 31+mph with 50/13 combination.    Spend most of the time in the 15-18 cogs.

If the course has a long downhill it is possible to swap out the 13 tooth for a 11 or 12 cog for this combination    12-14-15-16-17-18-19.

50/34 up front and I rode almost exclusively with an 11-28 cassette this year with no issues.  I have a 12-25 on for use on the trainer.

Check to see if your derailuer can handle 32 teeth. I think a 105 is rated for 27 but can handle 28. 32 would need a long cage or a mtb derailuer.
