I gave up an unhealthy diet and wasting excessive amounts of time on the computer.

I still get to watch some tv on the trainer, or after my workouts :p

I also gave up my obesity and the excuses about why it was ok to be in bad shape :p

I have a lot of fun doing what I do, so I don't see much sacrifice, other than some pizzas etc.  ( which I still have, but in better moderation ) :p

I think I've probably given up some friends that don't get it but don't try to either - probably needed to lose some of these anyway.

BUT I have also gained friends - more than I lost.

Given up disliking what I see in the mirror or on the scale.

Never given up anything i didn't want to really.

Group classes at the gym.  Started 1/2/12, HIM 10/20/12, another HIM 4/2013 and IMCDA 6/23/13.  I miss them terribly every single day, that was very hard for me.

I didn't "give up" anything. I get to do what I love, which is train and race. I have to "give up" time doing that for the rest of my day.

I have not become an Ironman yet but, I have given up family time more than anything. Made a lot of new friends though. I don't see the money thing so much because I'd just spend it on something else...

Also 60 pounds.

Sleeping in on the weekends. I get up at 5 on Saturday and Sunday to get my long bike and run done by noon. Makes it a lot easier around the house! I also watch a lot less TV during HIM and IM training periods.

This!  In the so-called off season, I really enjoy those days I get to "sleep-in" until 6:30!

x2.    And booze.    Still go out with friends on Thurs-Sat night.   Just no booze....allows me to actually wake up in the morning.

Honestly, when it felt like I was sacrificing too much in other areas that are important to me, I took a day or two off from training. I go into super-high anxiety mode without balance in my life.

That said, though, I did give up a lot of lazy weekend days, any house projects beyond basic cleaning (and sometimes that didn't get done!), and, toward the end of training, any exercising beyond s/b/r (so no strength training, yoga or pilates). And I slacked off on my job more than I should, but I'm still employed.

I gave up mainly sleep and free time.  There is no free time, only recovery time.

thecouch - 2013-01-07 6:01 PM i gave up world of warcraft and 33kg . i use to play about 20hours a week and was 120kg . joined the gym and stopped playing lost a lot of weight but was starting to get bored so started training for a tri after that i got a late entry in a ironman . i was 87kg on the day of my ironman 18 months later.

Former WoW player right here.  I quit while starting training for tri's due to time conflicts.  Best hobby switch I've ever done.

Golf, the sofa, procrastination, 20lbs, 20k and a nagging doubt that as a sprinter in my youth I'd never been truly fit (by my own measure).

As rather mediocre athlete, & below ave swimmer,  I aimed to be in better than "just finish" condition.  Wanted a solid cushion since a lot can happen over 140.6. Followed Fink Intermediate plus a bit extra- -peak tng vol's ~18hr/wk.   As things worked out I gave up almost everything except work.  My summer/fall before B2B (Oct 11) was just eat, work, train, sleep. Used up most of my earned vacation time for key long workouts & driving x-country to/from event.  Thinking back, I could prob have trained less since I finished in 13+.

Seems to me the actual "sacrifice" to complete the IM journey depends a lot on individual circumstances.  Predictable job hrs (w/minimal OT), convenient training facilities, & supportive family/friends are helpful.  As are good genes Wink

My marriage. Not 100% done, but getting there. No matter how much I discussed it with her and had her support for the race, the stress definitely was a catalyst for where we are now. IM was a dream for me that is now becoming a nightmare.

Anyways, enjoy!

natethomas2000 - 2013-01-07 6:31 PM The average American watches something like 3+ hrs of TV a day - give that up and you've got your training.

Agreed.  Makes it hard to take seriously the global criticism of triathletes as "selfish," not that there aren't a few that clearly are.

Personally, I've given up any sort of flexibility and looseness in how I schedule my life, some family time (during IM builds only), a fair bit of family energy, and anything that seems superfluous, mostly stupid social occasions that I'm all too happy to have an excuse to miss.

During an IM build, life piles up, and one of the many things I get to do in the immediate off-season is clean, organize, and catch back up.

I love training and racing so much that I feel that, as long as I'm meeting my obligations, it's well worth it.  Some old friends have stuck around, others have fallen away.  Training/racing has been a source of like-minded people with similar interests, and I've joined a team for this coming year as a source of more tri social contact.
