Hey don't give away the secret!

Doing NYC for the first time this year (second OLY). Was a VTC last year for bike in/out.

Advice to all first timers(from a first timer who volunteered last year)....easy gear coming out of T1 and be prepared for the sharp right turn and hill to get up to the HWY. Don't be a yahoo and take that hill at full speed...saw lots of kuckleheads crashing last year. (mostly the invincible younger guys)

Also in the red transition zone (shorter swim to bike run, shorter overall bike distance (slightly), longer run leg distance (slightly)

Nervous...you bet!

I'm in the 'red' transition as well, and I think I go in the water about noon time.

How are logistics for this? Major PIA picking up bike after the race? Crowds good?

Noon is a late start. The bad news for is that you're going into the water almost 6 hours after the first swimmer in the yellow transition goes in. By that point (and you can check, because it'll be online), it's possible that the legendary Hudson River current may be starting to shift against you, so you could be swimming against a slack or even slight upriver current by the time you jump in. They usually time the race so that the majority of the athletes get the benefit of the strongest downriver current. If you're in a very early or very late wave, depending on the year, you could miss the strongest current.

For an event this size, I think they do a great job with the logistics. The finish line festival has a lot to see and it's a bit of a hike from the finish area back to transition, which ends up not being so bad, since you have to wait until everyone is out of T2 before you can get your bike anyway. You're in a late wave, so by the time you get finished, you can probably get your bike without waiting, so hopefully that makes up for all the sitting around waiting to start and the potentially lame current.

Crowds along the run course are terrific, especially the first mile across 72nd St and near the finish. The upper portion of the park (miles 4 and 5) the crowds are more sparse, but the volunteers are great. There are few spectators on the bike course, since most of the time you're on a highway closed to traffic.

Check in on Saturday is easy. It can get a little crowded in the latter part of the day, but it's still fine. The registration process is time-consuming, but the expo is usually pretty good.

Noon? I dont think anyone gets in the water that late, unless they changed something this year. I was in the 'red' last year (and this year) and everyones in the water well before 9

Now that you mention it...

I looked at the schedule in the Athlete's guide and the Red Transition starts at 7:05 and each wave is supposed to go off every 20 seconds or so. Based on that, everyone should be in the water by 7:15.

By noon, you should be finished and on to your second beer at lunch!

No, 15 athletes go every 20 seconds, not every wave. Even so, Everyone should be in the water by 8 or so, no one is getting in at noon. Bike cutoff is 10AM.

Noon was a joke - I missed the ;*) emoticon. I'm in wave 23 or so which I believe is 1.25 hours after the first guys go in the water, I think. Regardless, I'm looking forward to this race. Biking through the toll booths will be a fun and unique thing.

i'm staying at the Hilton host hotel, so hoping to hit an early race meeting, and then getting my bike to transition asap on Saturday. Should be a great race. 10 day weather forcast is looking good, too.

I'll have my wife & 2 kids with me, but I'm up for a meet up! let me know!

Forecast keeps changing between nice and sunny and thunderstorms. I wouldn't mind a little rain on the run, but hope it stays dry for the bike course. Given the miserable weather of the last few weeks, we deserve a nice day!

Just came back from a bike-run brick in central park. the heat and humidity was brutal. it would be a struggle for me in the run leg, really wish it would cool down a bit!

oh did i mention, it was the first brick for me since last years NYC tri. way to prep for the race : p

Africa hot these days, been doing my bricks at home in the air conditioning, trainer to treadmill. At least my mental resistance to boredom and monotony is increasing.

They're calling for 80+ degrees and 80% humidity. This one's gonna hurt...

I just ran the course and the heat/humidity had me running over a minute slower per mile than normal. no water nor cold sponges - hope they have both but wow that sucked.

I'll take temps in the 80's over the 90's we had this past week.

FWIW, looks like low tide is just before 7:30am. Which means, just like last year, earlier waves get more current as the tide is rushing out. Later waves (i.e. mine) get the current, just not as much. Last year, watching those first waves ....man, it was fast!

I'm in too! Fifth NYC Tri for me this year, very excited for my hometown race. If only I had trained more . . .

And it does look like it will be a little bit cooler sunday - lets keep our fingers crossed. Last weekend was brutal.
