Subject: thinking about a new bike but what kind?

I'm getting a little burned out on the issues I have riding the farm roads around here. The biggest issues are being chased by dogs on almost every ride, wind, and farm equipment or the debris left in the road from the farm equipment. I guess I've read to many hit by car threads on BT because I just don't feel very safe and I'm often pretty tense on my rides.

I still love to ride but I often go to a State Park and ride around the paved road through the park which is only a 6 mile loop. This park also has some trails which if I had the right kind of bike I think I would enjoy incorporating into a longer ride. There is one hiking trail which is mostly wood chips, no steep climbs, a tiny bit of grass, lots of curves as it winds around a lake. Then there are several horse trails which I believe are mostly grass with a footpath created by the horses.

So is there a do it all kind of bike that would be fun to ride on the road but be able to handle some off road stuff too?

I have a hybrid that would probably work but, well, I guess I just don't like riding it. It is heavy and slow and I sit straight up and feel like a granny riding it.

A nice cyclocross bike, with all of the proper extra hole for fendes and racks later to turn into a tourning bike if needed in the future.  I went touring bike, because I wanted the fenders and racks and use it on all the limestone and paved bike trails in the area and some gravel roads.

Would a cycle cross bike work on the trainer through the winter? I'm thinking I could probably sell my road bike pretty easily and I really only ride it on the trainer. I think I only road it outside 2 or 3 times last year.

Yep. No issues except you'll need a trainer tire.

Look at Redline or Kona jake the Snake for great value plays. Ridley is alos a good choice.

Ok cool. After I asked that question I thought that sounded pretty dumb. I guess I meant would it be a good trade off (since I don't really think I need 4 bikes) to sell the roadie and sub with a cross bike.

The hybrid is not worth selling because it is about 12 years old and was only a $350 bike to start with. My kids are getting almost old enough now to go on family rides so this is the best choice for that kind of stuff.

I love my tri bike and my training friend that I ride with always rides her tri bike. I can't keep up with her on my road bike! The only purpose of my road bike is to get me through the winter on the trainer.

Looks like the dealer I've used for my road and tri bike only carries Felt and Giant for cross bikes.

Felt makes a great cross bike. Very good choice if it's your size.

Kona Jake or Rove (they're coming out with a Ti version of the Rove this year). Any of the "gravel road" bikes. I suggest disc brakes over cantilevers.

Another option might be to look into cycling groups around you. I also live close to "the country" so it is a few miles to get outta town then all open roads with the same issues, dogs, farm equip, fast moving cars.

I have started participating in group rides this year and it makes a world of difference. I can ride 3 times a week in a group around here and each group takes all skill and speed levels. It is amazing the difference in the way a group of cyclists is treated on the road as opposed to a single rider.

If you can find a local group to ride with you may just find the road riding to be fun again and decide to keep your road bike. Just a thought for you.

I understand all the words that are in this sentence and yet it still doesn't make sense to me...

I think a cyclocross bike would fit your needs quite well but I also ride my skinny tire bikes (road - 23mm and commuter 28mm) on gravel roads fairly regularly with no problems. However, if I could only have one bike, it would be a cyclocross bike due to its versatility even though mine only really sees use in the fall right now.

Just had another thought...

Maybe keep the roadie and get some skinny knobby tires for it. That way you can ride your trails when you want but if you need a fast roadie to keep up with a riding partner or something you can just change the tires back and be done.

Ha ha, well I already have a friend who wants my road bike so I don't mind selling it. I have never loved it like I should and have much more fun on the tri bike when I'm on the open road.

Hubby has the day off Friday so we maybe I can talk him into a trip to the bike shop and check it out.

I think everyone needs a full suspension 29er in their lives.

Hmm, this is a very sensible and budget friendly idea. However, it does not get me a shiny new bike .
