Biopsy results last week not good, so will have several spots removed.  It made me examine if I'm doing all I can to protect against sunlight during the long workouts.  Anyone have ideas related to the best clothing brands to wear while working out?  I already use heavy duty sunscreen I spray on and all over.  I used to fight the idea of long sleeve shirts in the heat, but I'm resigned that I need to step it up, try and bike more in very early morning, cover up more, etc.  Any ideas appreciated on ways to beat the sun.

Sorry to hear that news.  Check out some Australian websites maybe.  We have high instances of skin cancer here because of being so close to the hole in the ozone layer.  I'll have a look if I find any I'll let you know.

good luck.

I don't have any good suggestions. I just wanted to say I'm sorry about your biopsy results.  I know this can be a stressful time.  Take good care of yourself.

I think early morning and evening workouts are a great idea.

I live and train in the tropics so am pretty cautious about this. Cancer risk aside, I have light olive skin that tends to freckle unattractively, esp. arms, so I'm always trying to cover up! Ditto on the early AM or evening workouts. You might find protective sleeves (arm coolers) more comfortable than long-sleeved shirts if it's really hot. You can find them at most bike shops; Skins and Pearl Izumi make some good ones. Some have UV protection in the fabric, and cooling properties, esp. when you get them wet. I wear these for rides and brick runs. I'd still use high-SPF sunscreen on your arms in case the fabric doesn't block sun completely.

Look into under armour heat gear.  It keeps you cool and reflect sun

I have use Pearl Izumi Sun sleeves for the last 3-4 years with no issue. I also use the Heat gear mentioned and have had no problems with overheating.

FYI, I live in North Central Texas and it has been brutally HOT the last few years.

The Sleeves work well but discolor (grey) due to washing over time; only other color is black and I have yet to even give them a try.

There are a few other brands out there Ice or cool Sleeve??? and Capo but I have not used them.

The heat gear works very well for me but I cut a “slit” into the back center of the neckline to relieve the “pressure” around my neck.

Not sure how it will work with tri tops as the neckline seems to be lower, so sleeves may be the answer but if full coverage is what you need (want) heat gear might be worth the $35-40.

Thanks much for the suggestions on the sleeves and UnderArmour 'heat' gear!  I'm going shopping tomorrow!  I've been reading a ton in the past couple of days and workouts between 10-4 are out for me now.  I'm also switching to a pool where the shade covers most of it fairly early in the afternoon.  Also dumping the visors I wear running and going for full cover hat.  More 'wrap around' sunglasses in order also to protect the eyes more.  I don't want to give up the sport, so I'm going to have to make adjustments.  There are worse things in life, but a lesson for everyone...GET THOSE REGULAR PHYSICALS AND STAY ON TOP OF HEALTH ISSUES!  It was caught at my annual physical.

I feel your pain, I am recovering from melanoma surgery and waiting results on 4 more spots.  My dermatologist suggested this website:

always be aware of the sun and your skin exposure.  sunblock everyday for the rest of your life buy it in bulk and keep it in a couple rooms so you dont forget to apply it... maybe even in the car.   Long sleeves for sure and a hat.

I am 39 have had 4 spots come back positive over the last 5 years and a bunch more burned off just incase.  I do what i can but will not stop living my life.  I will go to the beach, fish, swim, ride, run, and just be aware that i will have this issue forever.  I am viligent about skin inspections and get them every 6 months by my provider.  Early diagnosis is the best way to treat

Most brands of tech fabric gear now have SPF and/or UV ratings.

I always wear a hat when running and have a couple of white long-sleeved Nike Dri-Fit shirts that I'll wear to keep the sun off my arms if I have run in the middle of the day.

Thanks for the ideas!  Had the melanoma procedure, and am now letting the stitches and wound recover.  Just got back in the water, and did my first run this week, and I'll ride my bike for the first time tomorrow.  What's the crowd thought on best sunscreen that doesn't sweat off.  I've been using Neutrogena, but it isn't sport specific.   I've zero'ed in on Solumbra clothing for workouts, and some UnderArmour gear as someone suggested.  Back to life with a change, that 6 month derm checkups are going to be part of the routine.  Everyone stay safe out there!

I just got some KineSYS sunscreen... tried to find it in a store, but no go, so ordered it online, got it cheaper with free shipping!  It's fragrance free (although I do detect a very slight sunscreen smell to it) and it's spray on, and it seems like a little goes a long way.  SPF 30, broad spectrum and really water resistant (rated at 80 minutes).  I ordered from RunOutlet.com.  I wish it was a little higher SPF, but if I'll wear it at ALL, I'll go with what I can get!  It's made for athletes.  Good luck on the healing and I'm amazed you're back to working out, I wasn't allowed to do ANYTHING until my stitches were out!

Thanks for the tip on the sunscreen.  80 minutes wet is great, so I'll get some.  I was surprised I was able to get back at it so quickly, but now that the stitches are out it's much more comfortable.  I got my new exercise clothing, so I have better cover now, as it's heating up here for the summer.  Do you get screened every three or six months now?

Every 4 months for 2 years.  Already had some pre-melanoma stuff going on, derm took 4 biopsies and 3 came back "funny".  Two didn't have clean margins so had to get skin punches, 3 stitches each.  Scares me that 3 out of 4 came back that way!  How many more are there just sitting there waiting to turn into melanomas???  Looks like I'll be one scarred up old lady the way it's going!  Better than dead, right?!!  Do you have to have your eyes checked?  I have to see an opthalmologist to make sure I don't have any melanoma in my eyes.  There was a guy here locally that had to have his eye removed because he had melanoma in it!!  Sure hope that check up comes back good!

This is the second malignancy I've had now, so I've retreated to sunscreen and being as fully covered as I can.  It's long sleeve on runs and rides now, and I'm waiting for a swim shirt for the pool.  I've moved my workouts to early morning and evening as much as I can to avoid the intense sun.  I'm getting used to it slowly but surely, and yes..it beats the alternative!

I've had the Solumbra sun gear now for a full week and can report that the running long sleeve shirt is light and well ventillated, so in 80 degree weather it was fine. The running hat with flaps in the back to protect the back of the neck is light also and totally covers the face in shade. The Solumbra swimming shirt is like a skin suit, light and flexible, so absolutely no wet suit feel to it. So far so good, and I'm getting used to it.

I've been experimenting with a variety of different sunscreens over the past little while due to fairly severe sunburns sustained during IMLP in 2011 and IM Cali 70.3 this year. Some BTers have suggested the following to me: Planet Sun sunscreen, Blue Lizard sunscreen, Bullfrog as well as the tech gear mentioned above. I have the desoto cool wing. The sunscreens are high SPF sports and water resistant. So far the Blue Lizard brand has been my fav with the Bullfrog used to spray on my back because it is the only one that has a spray formulation.
