I went out this morning at 5am for a nice 30mi bike ride and ran across only 2-3 other people until I was almost back home around 6:45.

So, to those that brave the pre-dawn hours to get your workouts in, I salute you.

I have just in the last month started working out in the mornings before work and sometimes early on weekends, and I love it.  It started as I had a hard time sleeping until my normal time, and instead of laying in bed awake, I started working out. My favorite early morning workouts are rides with no traffic...seriously it is the best time to ride. Plus it is much cooler than later in the day. If I get a workout in a lunch, after work I'm done with workouts and can be with my family more...works great!

Today I ran 5 miles before work. Bike intervals tomorrow morning....can't wait.

I have been in the habit since November of waking up just before the sun and getting a training session in before I go into work. When I wake up, I don't do anything anyway, so I decided to make this time useful. Lunch break is at the gym, and I am done for the day. It has worked well so far.!!

Early morning is my cup of tea as well. 18 month old daughter at home and wife is pregnant (early on), so it is nice to my workouts in when everyone is asleep. This way I get some family time after work and everyone is happy.

My preferred schedule is to work out early (before work). Got a swim in this morning (6-7:30 is when the local pool is open for laps).

With the longer workouts on my HIM training, I don't do as much in the morning though.

When I'm on my bike before 5:30 I don't know if I'm an Ironman in training or just a lunatic.

Right now I get up at 5 and go to the gym for cardio. When school starts back up and I have to be home earlier in the afternoons, I'll bump that back to 4! Yikes!

But it works for me. Shoot, by the time I wake up, I'm halfway done with my workout!

And I lift weights at lunch.

Doing it early eliminates the possibility of talking myself out of it. But I admit, since I've gotten interested in tri's, I'm much more interested in working out.

I'd love to be able to get a workout in before leaving for work during the week, but as it is, I wake up at 4:15 AM in order to be read to leave for work at 5 AM (one hour commute to boot!!). Needless to say, I'm not getting up at 1:45 AM in order to get a 2.5 hour run in so I do it during heat of the afternoon.

I will have to admit here that I am normally not a morning person. When I was just running it was pretty easy to manage 4 runs with the 2 during the week being after work and the 2 weekend workouts being just about anytime after I woke up.

Now that I decided to train for a triathlon the 9 SBR's I have to complete is a bit more challenging and I have to get up early in the morning to get most of these in except for the swims. I have to admit that once I get up (which is no easy task. LOL!) and get going I feel great and am glad I did it.

I too woke up a 5AM this morning to get an easy 3 miler in prior to daylight. This afternoon it's off to the pool to get in about a mile.

I overslept this morning and didn't get up until 4:15.  Gym parking lot was crowded when I got there at 5.  Here's one of my favorite quotes-it's in my log as a reminder to myself.

Train on your time, not your family’s: basically, if you're a busy family person, the sun is up and you're not training then you're either sleeping (which is fine) or you've shifted your training to your family's time. -BT article by Rich Strauss.

Now that it is 90-100F degrees until 10-11 PM around here, I need to get up and run early in the morning.

My body doesn't function that early though, so I am going to try to see if I can tolerate running in extreme heat and humidity. Yes, my sleeping in means that much to me.

I didn't know there was another option! HA HA

With two small kids and a busy husband, early morning workouts are the ONLY option for me! 5:30am comes early but it is a guaranteed workout and not nearly as early as some of the other people posting on this thread! 4:00am? YIKES

Kudos to EVERYONE who finds the time necessary to train for the great sport of triathlon!

Thats just it.  I dont see any other way to do it with 4 kids 4 and under (twins turn 1 in ten day!!).  Some of the longer rides I need to roll in about 9 or 10 on the weekends but some cutting into family time is necessary for longer events.  I am fortunate to have another weirdo (Morey) that will get in the saddle at 4 when everybody is sleeping.  Love to hear the roosters crow or the occassional donkey (no lie there).

...or the confused deer like this morning wondering wtf is coming down the road in the dark?

It's the best when we're cranking down the road, 20 miles under our belt, and one of us points out it's only 5:30 in the morning.  Haven't seen a car in eons.  I *heart* the early morning action!

Here's something Dan (morey1) and I have talked about before.

Since the vast majority of our riding is done in the dark and early morning light it's actually a thrill on the rare occassions when we are riding in bright sunshine and we can see our shadow on the ground.  It reminds us of videos from Kona.

Yeah, ain't it nice to wake up with a work out?!

A few years back I switched from after work outs to am work outs. My job meant later nights so the only time to get 'em in was early a.m. At first, I nearly died getting up at 540 am... all bleary-eyed and dazed. But then I got the hang of it and then became a mom and found that I had to get up even earlier - 440 am to get the work outs in! Wow! seems like yesterday I was up til midnight and sleeping til at least 830 am! ha ha

Anyhow... don't want to go back to evening work outs. Meant also having to take more showers....
But with this tri training stuff... I am having to go to the gym at night to swim. I got at 8 pm ish...so that I spend time with the family/son before his bed time. And know I could not do the 2 a day training all the time but for now, it's ok.

Early riser here...usually up by 4:45 a.m. to either hit the pool at the gym or bike or run.  There is no traffic, which is great, and I get to spend my evenings with my two boys (2 years and 1 year old).   I am even considering paying a yearly fee to gain access to the gym of the local community college that is a short 5 min walk from my office to get a luchtime run or swim in.  I must be nuts....either that or almost a triathlete (I haven't done my first race yet).

oooooh! those early am swims are a bit of a jolt to the system!

I could see doing it in the summer...but in the winter in Wisconsin.......brrrrrrr! (but then again, after a tri maybe I'll be up for a Polar Bear dip in Lake Michigan!)

Within the last month, I've become an early morninger. Between my job, school and training - both my school and training were suffering. So now it's training in the morning. Nights are devoted to me and my school work. Weekends are for my long sessions. I probably will not go back after school is done. I like knowing that the evenings are just for me.

I HATE being a early riser.  Fortunately, I don't have to workout first thing.  I just have to get dressed and get myself to the bus by 5:26, which is hard enough.  But I do that so I can go to the gym once I'm here in the city.  I get to my desk around 6:50, and after I check my email and phone messages, I head over to the gym (usually around 7:30 or so).

If I didn't have this horrid commute, no way would I be getting up at 5 am.

That said, every day while driving to the bus station, I pass a guy out for his morning run.  He's always there, always at the same time.  Props to the folks who make it happen.

I have never been an early bird.  I desire the ability to be one, but I just cant fathom waking at 4 am to get a workout in.  As it is, I have to be up at 5 to be at work at 6.  To make matters worse, on my drive out to work, I must pass a dozen or two cyclists heading out to do the Lake Mead Loop.  The weather is perfect, traffic is low, and the sunrise over the lake is beautiful.  When I get off work, it is usually around 108 to 110 degrees, and try talking yourself into a workout at that point.   I guess it all comes down to discipline and the level of commitment.

Crap, I guess I have to start waking at 4 am.  I will be easy to spot, I will be the guy sleeping on his bicycle.

AM workouts are all about a pregnant wife, a 2 and 4 year old at home. I MADE myself a morning person bacause I'm not missing any kid time in the PM (although of course that's when they're the fussiest). I've started doing early morning OW swims with some buddies as the sun rises and there is nothing like it!! Kudos to all of you!!

oh I would like to be an early morning workouter. It is what I am aiming at. Have managed 6am twice in last couple of months. Loved it when I got out there but sooooo difficult to drag myself out of bed.
Is it just getting into the habit? How long will it take?

One of my worries is that I will be so tired in the evening that by the time the kids are in bed and dinner is done I will have no time with my hubby.
