Subject: Metro area ows locations
So being new to Triathlon, I have a question for the more experienced people near the Twin cities.

What are some good metro area/close to metro lakes for open water training? Favorites that you feel like sharing?

Where in the metro? East? West? Central?

If for some strange reason I am forced to swim in a lake, I'd pick Square Lake.

The most popular is probably Nokomis. The benefit is you can swim in deep water and you're never alone, including lifeguards in the summer. It's the only place I will swim without friends. The downside is lifeguards keep you in a confined area and it's very busy in the summer. You also have to pay for parking or look for spots a ways away.

If your in the southern metro I am in a group that swims every Friday morning. We swim in Lake Marion and then ride and or run after. I know the day doesn't work well for most but this group has a lot of people w flexible schedules.

Supposed to start at 8:00 a.m. But there is usually some very important b.s.ing happening first. Most days someone will be ther around 7:30 to start swimming early.

Thanks for the replies. I am actually in the central metro area, near Calhoun. Though I really don't find the prospect of swimming for training at that lake very appealing.

The group on Fridays sounds interesting, can't make it though as work gets in the way.

If your in south mpls then I recommend lake nokomis. Especially once the Tuesday night "open swims" start happening. Prior to that you can go out and do laps back and forth parallel to the swim buoys.
