Ironman 70.3 Hawaii - Triathlon

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Kohala Coast, Hawaii
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
90F / 32C
Sunny
Total Time = 5h 28m 41s
Overall Rank = 209/1550
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 13/125
Pre-race routine:

buses got delayed so we got to transition late, and had about 15 mins to load our bikes and get ready to start.
Event warmup:

no warm up.
Swim
  • 39m 46s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a fan of the new swim. It didn't make sense to have some buoys on the left and some on the right. For this many people, allowing them to fan out on one side is best. Anyway, this caused a bottleneck at the start mainly, and mass confusion on the last segment. No one knew where they were due to heavy chop, head current, and sun in the face. Also lack of directional buoys on the last segment. Thumbs down to the swim race design.

luckily the water was fairly reasonable for most of the swim. but head current and chop worked us on the last segment to the finish. Nice and clear temp was great.
Transition 1
  • 03m 42s
Comments:

The usual chaos up the walkway into T1 and the mass of athletes and bikes clogging up the path. No problems mounting the bike though.
Bike
  • 2h 46m 27s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.15 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike started off ok, then the wind started acting up in Kawaihae, and then again heavy coming into Hawi before the turnaround. Very difficult the last few mile or so into the aid station. Then nice descent out of Hawi, but winds attacked again in Kawaihae, and sapped what I had left on the hills there. Pushed past Hapuna to T2 but was difficult.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
What would you do differently?:

T2 was ok, just pooped from the bike.
Run
  • 1h 56m 36s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Run started hot, with little to no wind. The temp got higher and higher as the race progressed. Absolutely crazy hot on the golf course, and "Road to No where"
What would you do differently?:

Not anything in particular, did the best I could.
Post race
Warm down:

Usual, drank draft Longboard YAY ! and ate the burger..YUM !

What limited your ability to perform faster:

left heel bothering me, had a careful strategy planned for the run so not to destroy it further.

Event comments:

Did not like the new swim, but it worked.
The rest of the race was well done, as usual.

Great job Noel. After finishing the race, I told myself I would never do that race again. 48 hours out and I think I'll be back. Not 100% sure about 2014, but definately again.

Nice race, especially considering the conditions, current, winds, heat. A little something for each leg. But solid performance overall.

Didn't realize they changed the swim. Why did they do that? I thought the old course was great.

I may have to put this on the calendar for next year.

Thanks !!

I'm not sure all the reasoning behind the swim course change, but something was said to appease "right hand breathers" Certainly the wave start was implemented to be line with improving the safety. I don't mind wave starts, and have done many, but this was not enough room allotted for all the AG Males, which resulted in a blob standing still for a few minutes as the swimmers fanned out.

I agree, the old course was fine, I don't mind they switched to counter clock-wise, but if they were attempting to avoid the sun, they failed on that!!!
DIRECT sun for the long leg back to the beach. It was blinding! I just put head down and plodded forward.

The crazy part to me was they had these red "turn" buoys to keep on the left, and a string of orange buoys to keep on your right, as in the race brief.
It wasn't clear how to use the orange buoys, as swimmers were on both sides.

The fact the website had conflicting info up to race day was also disconcerting.

As usual, I had to rely on following the fast people...thankfully for this, I'm not the leader LOL
