Set Up Events
71F / 22C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 46m 13s
Overall Rank = 36/74
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 6/9
Pre-race routine:

Was staying at my inlaws; drove the day before and picked up my packet. Up at 6am, ate my usual breakfast of oatmeal and Dt Mt Dew and out the door. Event site is a ways out and very glad to have been there the day before
Event warmup:

Set up TA, got my chip and marked. Did maybe a half mile run to wakeup my legs. Hit the bathroom multiple times. Loaded on the wetsuit and hit the water for a quick warmup. Not excited by the stiffing breeze. We started late as they struggled with the swim course setup to tie down the bouys
Swim
  • 31m 29s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was surprised at my time - I thought is was way worse. The swim took a while and the breeze made it harder than advertised. With a couple of notable extensions, I had clean water. I did get knocked with an elbow pretty good one time. Wetsuit was a huge plus
What would you do differently?:

Sighted some more - more open water swims.
Transition 1
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

I purposefully took a few extra seconds to slow down, plus added nutrition to my suit and my Garmin.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 19s
  • 24.02 miles
  • 19.96 mile/hr
Comments:

I fact that I was 25th overall but 5th in my age group shows how tough the AG was; the wind was straight into on the last half and kicked some butt.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more - I focused on eating but not drinking
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Added socks for the run
Run
  • 59m 11s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

UGH - first mile was a 8:24, mile twi 9:06 then mile tree was a 8:46 then the wheels popped off. Mile 4 is a 9:47 Mile 5 is a 10:30 then Mile 6 is 10:17

The heat really got to me; never cramped but legs were toast
What would you do differently?:

Drink more on the bike; and longer bricks
Post race
Warm down:

I was hurting - grabbed some water and a seat. then more liquids and tried to keep moving. Finally got my results and slowly packed up - the reality is I was dehydrated and knew it on the run. Took me a couple hours to get hydration straight

What limited your ability to perform faster:

First time ever at this distance so it was much mental as physical -

Event comments:

This a very good race - its out in the boondocks which helps. Unfortunately the Raleigh Half came on top of this weekend and really affected the race. My hope is does not affect the race because I enjoyed my experience a great deal

Great volunteers, good course.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

If you are calm while everyone around you is losing it, you probably don’t know what the hell is going on.
