I ALWAYS carry a spare tube, pump, levers, flat kit AND few tools in a tool bottle behind my seat, race AND train. I don't know why though, as my Gator Hardshells never flat. :-)

For training rides I bring tube, CO2, tools and a patch kit.

When I race short, I leave it off. When I have raced HIMs I zip tie a Pit Stop behind my seat as a compromise. Not sure what I'll do at IMFL yet...

no spare tire, but i take two tubes with me on HIM, but i have a set of racing wheels and only see use on race day, so it takes a while to wear out. I would never attempt a big race on tires i thought i would have trouble on.

I don't carry a spare tire (no idea where the heck I would put it?) and I don't carry a flat kit, though I probably should.  I do, however, carry 2 spare tubes with 2 CO2 cartridges, multitool, etc., etc., etc.

Originally posted by gsmacleod I don't race triathlons without a spare; even a 10km walk in bike shoes or barefeet is a long way so IMO it is best to be prepared to fix a flat and be able to ride back to transition if nothing else. A well positioned flat kit, even if you are carrying a spare tubular, should have zero impact on your race (no aero penalty) so there really is no reason to not have a flat kit with you. Shane

^^^^ Wise man and this is coming from the perspective of someone who took her flat kit off before my most recent sprint, got a flat after the turn around and had no way to fix it! Thankfully I was able to hitch a ride back to transition. Never again!

I always keep a flat kit on my bike, any distance I ride.
