Overall Rank = 137/207
Age Group = 30-34 female
Age Group Rank = 20/28
Pre-race routine:

Black tea and banana.

mild stretching and light jog from swim exit to T1 to familiarize myself with the landmarks.
Swim
  • 13m 33s
  • 400 meters
  • 03m 23s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started out ok, then got kicked a few times, started getting me off my rhythm. NEar the 2nd buoy i realized i was in a sea of yellow caps (the color of the men's wave that started 3 mins after us) that was disheartening, i flipped on my back and saw a couple blue caps from my wave behind me. THat motivated me to beat at least 1 person from my wave so i regrouped for the last 100, then got a little off course and i could hear spectators shouting, "wrong way!" I corrected and made it out just barely ahead of 2 girls in blue caps
What would you do differently?:

relax and not worry about others
Transition 1
  • 04m 14s
Comments:

Decent. I was one of the only people jogging and removing wetsuit at same time.
What would you do differently?:

i spent 20-30 secs putting on a riding jersey because i thought i would be cold. THat was totally unnecessary and cost me another 10 secs to remove in T2

Bike
  • 48m 49s
  • 12 miles
  • 14.75 mile/hr
Comments:

Could have pushed harder, was trying to save some energy for the run. Ate a cliff shot blocks package and drank about 20-22 oz of gatorade.

Picked a girl in my age group to race against. We passed eachother about 4 times, she overtook me at the end while I was drinking and I didnt ever catch her again.
What would you do differently?:

drink less water. Pre-open the shot blocks package and gatorade bottle. Push harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

Seemed fine.
What would you do differently?:

forget riding jersey. Run faster out of transition area
Run
  • 29m 36s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

tried to pace myself in beginning, felt like I would barf at about mile 1... too much fluid intake I think. Powered through that and nausea passed.

At about mile 1.25 saw my super athlete friend heidi on her way back from the turnaround and realized she was only about 6 or 7 mins ahead of me, that motivated me to try to close the gap on her and I picked up the pace.

Nearing the turnaround I saw the gal who I was racing on the bike and realized she was only about 1 minute ahead of me so I picked up the pace more to try to catch her... i think she did the same thing when she saw me because I never caught her even after increasing my pace 3 times.

At turnaround I rinsed my mouth out with water due to cotton mouth, but I didnt swallow. I got cotton mouth again with less than half mile to go which nearly gagged me, but I mentally refused to barf and overcame it
What would you do differently?:

nothing. Fastest 5k ever for me at 29:36 and a pace of 9:31 min/mile!!
Post race
Warm down:

MUscle milk, then a free beer to celebrate the end of my 65 day sobriety challenge.
Then danced till i nearly barfed at the live music tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

holding back when i didnt need to.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

I am running Boston in April and Ironman Lake Placid is in July. I have been told that it is ambitious to think about doing an IM so close to a marathon due to the recovery time. Any suggestions?

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

A description of my experiences during my first triathlon. It was a great experience. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
