I don't know which of the three makes me faster or slower, easier or harder to recover with, or any other effect on my triathlon/endurance hobby that I've had for 30 years. I could be an alcoholic, a caffiene junky, an adrenaline junky, or just a guy who doesn't try to overanalyze a good time and a lifestyle that has given me nothing but enjoyment, and now a way to keep spending time with my children as they become teenagers and young adults. I'm partial to Sierra Nevada products......Ruthless Rye IPA is excellent. Torpedo IPA at nearly 9% is fantastic.....but I once had too many and got lost in my own home trying to find the bathroom. Three cheers! I'll take an Ommegang now please. *Hands thebigb a Hennepin* |

Did anyone else read this article in Runners World (is Beer Good for Runners)? http://www.runnersworld.com/drinks-hydration/beer-run. Personally, my favorite part of a long run or ride is an outdoor beer shower. Does that make me an alcoholic exhibitionist? Cheers, Nancy |

Pro 6011 Camp Hill, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: What do you think about beer as an "after"? Originally posted by tlancer23 There is a world of difference between having 1-2 drinks responsibly and being an alcoholic. IMO, alcohol is like most things in life. In moderation, it won't hurt you (and may even have health benefits based on several studies), but taken to excess it can be extremely bad for you.Originally posted by erik.norgaard Does Jager count? Just kidding. Alcohol still dehydrates the body right? Personally, with the exception of an occasional Bloody Mary with dinner I do not drink at all because of the negative health and lifestyle consequences.I don't see many alcoholics succeeding in life, much less athletics, so yes I agree with Erik, I think it sends a bad message. Alcohol ruins many lives, folks. I think the difference between beer sponsors and Taco Bell is that a Nachos Bell Grande does not carry endless legislation regulating its distribution and consumption, nor the criminal liabilities and negative social sanctions involved in irresponsible product usage. Originally posted by VGT OK, I'm European, we have different view of nudging over here. But: It's not just about you having a beer after a race, there's a difference between having it for you to buy in the bar and sponsoring a sports event. It's about associating sports, exercise, active and healthy lifestyle with alcohol. It sends a signal to the next generation that drinking is part of a healthy lifestyle. It is not. IMHO, breweries should let their alcohol free beers sponsor these events to promote these alternatives.Originally posted by erik.norgaardI must admit that I'm a bit offended when races have breweries sponsoring the event, I think that alcohol shouldn't be linked with sports. Why not? I find that to be a little absurd. We're adults, and we train extremely hard and balance life in the process. To suggest that we cannot also responsibly consume alcohol is a bit short-sighted. |

Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: What do you think about beer as an "after"? We're heading to Cleveland this weekend for a family reunion (and memorial of sorts for my wife's grandmother who passed some months ago in her LATE 90's! At least my kids got some some good genes, all from their mom) and a Dad's day race that we always did when we lived there. Should be fun, but we're both really looking forward to the Commodore Perry IPA from Great Lakes Brewing Co. This stuff is absolutely the bomb - one of the early beers to crack 7% (around 7.4% IIRC). When we first tried it, we wondered why we liked it so well. Our friends there are having a get together midday Sunday after the race and I am heartily looking forward to "sailing with the Commodore" and crew again! Got to try and find some of the Lake Erie Monster, as well, but that's seasonal and we never seem to time trips to visit Kim's family quite right to try it. Mmmmmmmmmm…… Commodore Perry IPA……… mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm………. Matt |

What's unhealthy is a fear of alcohol or teetotaling nature, like one that thinks alcohol is unhealthy. It elevates alcohol to a taboo level and opens the door for normalized abuse. |

I think by "technical" definitions that makes me an alcoholic. I guess I'm stuck on step one. For all those that have mentioned Founders, I agree. Grand Rapids, Michigan has turned into a phenomenal beer city. I basically don't even allow myself to go to Founders because I'll end up wanting to try multiple high alcohol content beers (~9%), and soon I'll be making phone calls for a ride home. Since the name is applicable to me as well, I also tend to drink a few of their Dirty Bastards. Their two IPAs (Centennial and All Day) are outstanding as well. |

Veteran 179 The Woodlands, Tx | Subject: RE: What do you think about beer as an "after"? After IMTX 2013 I went home and thought that a beer would be a fantastic idea. It wasn't heavy, just a cold Coors Light with some salt and a little lime. My wife had been herding the cats all day - the kids - so I told her I'd take our youngest (8 months) to his crib for the night. In typical father of the year fashion, I had my boy in one hand and a beer in the other as I painstakingly made my way up the stairs and into his room. I sat down in a chair and kinda rocked the little guy to sleep as I reflected on my first Ironman. All of the sudden I started sweating uncontrollably - dude no way - and getting dizzy - SOB. I quickly stood up, praying I wouldn't pass out with my son in my hands, and laid my little guy in his crib. He looked up at me with a smile, as if he knew. Satisfied he was "safe" and outta my spray zone, I walked three to four feet to the bathroom - a long distance after an ironman. I raised the seat and just puked half that beer right back up. Immediately the sweating stopped, as well as the dizziness. Usually I have no problem drinking a beer after a race, but I guess it just depends on the race. |
