OK, not really as a recovery drink!  Laughing

I am enjoying a Hoponius Union India Pale Lager at the moment (it is sooooooo good - a great local beer, and a nice twist on the IPA) and wondering about it's properties as a recovery bevvy.

I know there aren't a ton of carbs in it, that alcohol isn't exactly chia extract or the like, and that it can make the next morning's early swim workout just a leeeetle less appealing at oh-dark-thirty.

However, I really enjoy a beer on the odd night after a big training day - and have to say that I think it helps keep the universe in balance.  Wink  Seems there's often an almost odd link between tri and beer - maybe that's why I love the sport.

What do you all think about the occasional beer at the end of a good day?  I'm clearly in favor, but I'll throw it out there…

Talk amongst yourselves...

Matt

I don't drink... also it probably has more negative recovery aspects then it does positive.

Been waiting for a beer post!

+1 to enjoying a beer after a hard training day, or a light training day for that matter. Nutritionally there may not be much in the way of recovery, but in terms of the soul, I find it does my spirit well to enjoy a cold one. Some recommendations:

1) Shift Pale Lager by New Belgium (Limited distribution in the U.S.)
2) Crank Yanker IPA by Eddyline Brewing (even more limited distribution)
3) Lagunitas IPA
4) O'Dell 90 Schilling (if you aren't into IPA's)

Cheers!

The only bad thing about beer and recovery is I can't drink just one. There have been some studies that show isn't all that bad for recovery provided you don't over consume. Dang, now I want a beer and I'm dieting...thanks.

I don't necessarily think about beer after a training or race, but I sure do think about it after coming down a river on a kayak. Sorry for the off topic rant. Anyways, I'm a pretty simple when it comes to beer. Lately, I've been enjoying Pointe Beer Amber Ale. It's a great recovery drink!

P.S. Actually, I do remember enjoying a Miller Lite (or two) after a mud run that I did recently.

YES!  That's what I think about it.  Someone in COJ (I need to look it up, because I should send them a hand written thank you) recommended the shower beer a few weeks ago.  Oh, hells yes, it is all that and then some.

Tonight's recovery beer:

If you haven't tried it yet, it's a lovely beer for summer.

Yes.

Have a Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout in the fridge (mini fridge at arms length) that I will probably be drinking before I finish typing this sentence.

Here are a few others that I am fond of:

1) Great Divide Yeti Stout (most beer by Great Divide is awesome)
2) Founders Porter
3) Stone Ruination IPA

If I am out I will usually go with a Guinness or a Sam Adams, but I am not a beer snob, I can and will drink most any beer.

The answer is IPA. Founders, Stone, Lagunitas, Bells, Dogfish, Avery and/or Birdsong (local, awesome!).

Add me to the Yes demographic. I'm just now starting to get into home brewing so I imagine there will be a fair amount of experimenting with what beer is best for recovery and as a pre-race boost (I have a feeling that last one will take some time)

I think it is perfect! Most studies show drinking in moderation is very good for your health! It is also great as a reward to yourself!

Basic Electrolyte Energy Replacement

Pretty much a fan of just about any darker beer but, my top favorites after a good, hard, workout are, Irish Death and Guinness. I don't normally go for ligher beers but, I have been enjoying Batch 19 lately.

I'm not a fan of drinking anymore. Sometimes I will grab a a drink later at night on a long day but that's like once every 2 months. After I got 1.5 glasses of beer and went on the treadmill about 4 hours later and noticed I was running about .8 mph slower but my HR was the same as if I were going . 8 faster (my HR is really consistent on the treadmill), I pretty much swore off drinking until I'm done with my 140.6. A day or two after that, I do plan to celebrate...a lot Just not that night or the day after since I know my body will need something actually good for it to recover.

Count me as a yes...Craft IPA or *gasp* Canadian Light Lager (Labatt's or Molson) depending on my mood and how hard the workout was. I usually try to get at least a pint of water in first though. Sometime even if its not noon yet. Never after a before work workout however, I do have some standards.

I usually don't have a beer as an after/recovery drink, and I try not drink the month leading up to a race. I must admit that I'm a bit offended when races have breweries sponsoring the event, I think that alcohol shouldn't be linked with sports.

That said, in the off season I wouldn't sacrifice my right to a beer after a long day. And in fact I'm just starting up a homebrew ... what else would you do on your rest day?

Why not? I find that to be a little absurd. We're adults, and we train extremely hard and balance life in the process. To suggest that we cannot also responsibly consume alcohol is a bit short-sighted.

I'm not a fan of beer whilst training but usually I will have a glass or two of red wine on race day evening as a chill out / reward to self!

I usually work out right after work, so beer is my recovery drink of choice while I sit in my hot tub and contemplate what wine I am going to have with dinner

Everything in moderation...
After a race, I like a:

1. New Glarus Spotted Cow
2. Blue Moon
3. Whatever is free or cold

I think this is the problem...I wouldn't advocate having alcohol prior to a workout....Even four hours later..

However a Short's Brewing - Magician or Bellaire Brown or almost any stout is fine afterwards albeit in moderation..

OK, I'm European, we have different view of nudging over here.

But: It's not just about you having a beer after a race, there's a difference between having it for you to buy in the bar and sponsoring a sports event. It's about associating sports, exercise, active and healthy lifestyle with alcohol. It sends a signal to the next generation that drinking is part of a healthy lifestyle. It is not.

IMHO, breweries should let their alcohol free beers sponsor these events to promote these alternatives.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"
