I have been a bike commuter for years, with occasional longer rides (25-40 miles) for fun, and am doing IMAZ this November. Have been doing IM focused base training since beginning of year with 3+ rides/week (one longer: around 40 miles, 2 hills/speed intervals). I absolutely consider myself a very novice cyclist. Bike handling skills need a lot of work and I tend to average 15 mph on longer rides (tend to have lots of slowing/stopping for traffic etc.). My bike is a used Cannondale R400 3.0 Aluminum road bike. I test road a tri bike once and crashed (face to ground, emergency room, stitches, etc.). So my question is: considering the low level of my bike skills and bike fitness, is it worth buying and riding a tri bike for Ironman training and race? I know it would likely make a big time difference on the IMAZ course (fairly flat, lots of straightaway), but I also think the advantages would be lost on someone at my skill level. Anyone done this race on an aluminum road bike? Thoughts???

have you done any triathlons of any distance yet ?

if not, I would suggest doing a few shorter ones before hopping into an iron distance race.

the reason I suggest this, is you will see how your current bike works for you.

of course 112 miles in the saddle is a different story for full distance.

I won't comment on many issues raised by this post, but i had two friends do their first IM at IMAZ on road bikes, one didn't even have clipons.

Not sure about your "big picture", but I did my first IM on my aluminum trek 1.2 and will do my 2nd on the same bike this year.

Fwiw I've done 2 IM's and the first one was on a Specialized Allez (aluminum w/ 105 no clip ons) and my second was on a Cannondale Slice with Ultegra.

Obviously race/fitness conditions have a lot to do with things, but I was a solid 15 minutes faster in my first with the roadie. Just saying it's by no means a deal breaker to be on a roadie.

There are PLENTY of people doing Ironman on regular aluminum road bikes. I would venture to say 1/3+ are on road bikes (many will have clip on aerobars, but are still a road bike). Sure, most of the faster folks will be on dedicated tri bikes, but a whole lot of people are at Ironman to finish,
which is the end goal of most who start the journey.

All that matters is that you are comfortable on your bike and it is maintained and equipped to get you through training and the race. .

The triathlon bike vs. road bike quandary. Before you even ask the road bike vs. tri bike question, you should have a couple sprint triathlons or duathlons under your belt.
