Colonial Beach, Virginia
United States
Set Up Events

Overcast
Total Time = 1h 51m 4s
Overall Rank = 234/321
Age Group = Master Clydes
Age Group Rank = 6/7
Pre-race routine:

I couldn't sleep the night before. My pool events had been local and this was out of town and I stayed at a hotel. Nerves and not using my bed made me turn a few times in the night. Finally got up early to go get breakfast.

My usual routine includes coffee and a bagel with cream cheese. Unfortunately there was no place in Colonial Beach open at 4am for something like this. I ended up at 4:10am in a 7 Eleven getting my coffee and a muffin instead. It filled me up.

Event warmup:

Warm up was good. I stretched after setting up my transition area. I then went down and got in the
Swim
  • 31m 24s
  • 750 meters
  • 04m 11s / 100 meters
Transition 1
  • 03m 23s
Comments:

Transition 1 is always a problem for me. I still like to wear socks and put a shirt on. I need to get a tri full length suit for the future. Putting on the shirt when your wet is always a time problem for me.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get a one piece tri suit for future event like this.
Bike
  • 41m 39s
  • 14 miles
  • 20.15 mile/hr
Comments:

I pushed at a comfortable cadance and pace. I didn't want to over push considering I wanted to save some energy for the run. I thought I would pull about a 20 mile per hour pace. I did, so I was happy. The roads were open to traffic and I actually got caught up behind a car that wouldn't pass another rider who was going slower. I need to get out of the water quicker so I am not passing so many cyclists.
What would you do differently?:

Stay in areo position even more.
Transition 2
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

Transition 2 went smoothly. My shoes went on quickly. My bike was on the far end of the rack area so I had to run to the end of the rack to put the bike away..
What would you do differently?:

Have the race belt in the front position to start.
Run
  • 32m 28s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was a steady pace. It was flat and I just kept moving. I had thoughts to stop and walk a few times but I had put in enough training to finish.
What would you do differently?:

I wouldn't change a thing about this run. It was steady and just the right energy exertion.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around to cool down and then spoke to others about their accomplishment. It was a fun day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My main detractor was my swim time and run time. I need to focus on those two events. Everyone in the field around me had much worse bike times. This is my strong event and I don't need to work it nearly as much as the swim and run.

Event comments:

I plan to do Colonial Beach again next year. Maybe the Olympic Distance!!!!

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.
