Platte River Fitness Series
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 16m 53s
Overall Rank = 22/31
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 5/5
Pre-race routine:

Cup of coffee prior to race meeting. I wasn't feeling good and didn't want to eat anything to add to the upset stomach feeling I had going on.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 25m 42s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m 34s / 100 meters
Comments:

About what I expected given my poor technique and training level
What would you do differently?:

Train harder and keep working on technique
Transition 1
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

Pretty good transition given where my bike rack location was.
What would you do differently?:

Arrive earlier to get a better spot on the rack
Bike
  • 1h 38m 43s
  • 25 miles
  • 15.21 mile/hr
Comments:

First loop went well, then on the second loop a vehicle was on the course and made a right turn down an alley right in front of me. I hit the brakes, hit the curb and avoided a collision. Unfortunately I also bent my rim slightly that required the on course bike mechanic to come to my aid. That stop cost me about 15 minutes before getting back on the bike course. It could have been worse.
What would you do differently?:

Be more alert.
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

First time I tried removing my feet from shoes before dismount line. Overall pleased with the time.
Run
  • 1h 08m 57s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 49s  min/km
Comments:

My goal was to run my target heart rate for the upcoming half ironman and I was able to stay close to that throughout the course.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - this was not my A race and it provided a good test of my race plan.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank 2 bottles of water, showered and got massage. Watched award ceremony and went home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was feeling nauseous during the swim and that stayed with me throughout the race. I didn't take on any nutrition. I also didn't drink enough water on the bike, going through half a bottle (about 10 oz). Definitely need to remember to drink more when riding. I did take a water bottle with me on the run because I knew there was only the one aid station at the turnaround. There was also a water station at the finish line (the second lap start point) but I didn't know it was there until I got there.

Event comments:

There was only 1 water station on the course 1.5 miles from the start line (turnaround for the run). The finish line also had a water station but it was only there for the turnaround for the Olympic run since it wasn't on the bike course. There were no porta potties which didn't affect me but did a few other people. The Olympic started first but once the sprint and super sprint events started the course got congested quick with the added people/bikes. All in all a good event. I would definitely do it again next year.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
