That is horrible.  My guess is that they were both so exhausted and traumatized from the first incident, that they were not thinking clearly enough to notice and avoid the second.

Very sad indeed and I feel horrible for their family.  However, I have to ask how they did not get out of the car.  They drove off a boat ramp, so clearly there was time.  They had enough time to climb in the back seat and call 911.  I guess in the heat of the moment you just don't think clearly...  On the other end of the spectrum we just had a woman's car get smashed into by a semi truck, go off the Chesapeake Bay bridge, fall 40 feet into the bay, and she was able to climb out and swim to shore.

Reminds me of an incident that happened in Denver when I lived there - maybe 15 years ago.

In short, car wrecked with severe injuries.  They brought in "flight-for-life" to evac the injured, while leaving the helicopter hit some powerlines and crashed killing everyone.

Sad and bizarre.

Wow, how terrible. Mythbusters did a show about cars in water. In their tests, the electronics continued to work until the battery died some time later. You can open a door because of the water pressure. You have to break the window and swim out. Or you have to wait until the car fills with water, and the pressure is equalized, and then you can open the door.

I'm sure they were just panicing and not thinking straight after sucha stressful day.

I was thinking about the Mythbusters episode I saw that one too... It is interesting how the mind works though.  According to reports the car simply drove down a boat ramp so I'd have to imagine that they had at least 30 seconds or more before the car was deep enough to prevent the doors from opening, and a couple of minutes or more before the water was even at the window level.  Tragic.

One slight problem. I don't know how to swim at all. When I say 'at all', I don't even dog paddle because I am scared to death of water. But I am going to do this.

Twenty of the total 25 deaths associated with triathlons as recorded by USA Triathlon occurred during the swim portion of the events. So, what’s the deal with swimming?

I went into the pool area (as this was a pool swim) and got body marked. That's when it hit me that I was there to race - this was not a clinic.

I got battered by the ocean in the swim but I had made it out...bruised and bloodied, but not beaten.
