Subject: Hed 3 ----> How to prevent flat tires???!!!
Hi,

I've only ridden on some used Hed 3 wheels about 4 times now, and on 2 of the rides (20 miles) I've had flat tires. Is this normal for Hed 3's? Is it because of the 19 mm rim width? Just curious if this is just a coincidence.....

Not normal... Take the tire and tube out and run a cotton ball along the inside surfaces of the rim. If anything snags then you've found the problem.

Also, make sure you're not overinflating the tires.

If anything snags the cotton ball, do you just file it down to smooth it?

Thanks.

Not at all normal. Haven't had a single flat on mine in the two seasons I've owned it, and that includes over ten races and lots of training miles. I would start by looking for the cause of the flats. Do your tubes have holes around the outer perimeter? That'd indicate your tires were penetrated by debris, and that it has nothing to do with the Hed. Or do you instead have holes on the inner perimeter? That could be a rim problem. Or do you see big rips? That'd be a pinch flat caused by faulty installation or tire pressure.

Most of the time, if something snags it's because the rim tape has moved or applied incorrectly. Remove the tape and replace it. If its in the rim wall then yes, you will need a very fine grain polishing stone to remove the imperfection.

You shouldn't need rim tape with H3's, unless something wierd is going on.

Check the inside of the rims as suggested. Something sharp could be in there. If so, I usually wet sand the rough bit or sharp bit down smooth.
Check the tire(s), they could have a bit of metal or other small sharp object in them that is causing the puncture.
When you put new tube in, make sure you are not pinch flatting the tube. I find putting a little bit of pressure in the tube before putting in the wheel helps.

Is the puncture on the same wheel every time? Is it at the same place every time? When you flat you really want to remember where on the inner tube it happened. If it's happening in the same place over and over, there there is something in the rim or tire causing it. I've had tires that I could never figure out why I was flatting and just ended up tossing the tire and that solved my issue. I have a tire that had a little sharp bit of wire in it that was causing flats, but the wire was tucked up in the tire until a lot of pressure was applied to it, super hard to find.

I've seen H3's and discs with rough edges on the engraved serial numbers on the rim surface that were enough to cause flats.

Smoothing out any rough edges is the obvious solution, but I also use rim tape.  Cheap insurance.
