Total Time = 5h 06m 6s
Overall Rank = 90/522
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 20/74
Pre-race routine:

Get up, eat some breakfast, drink a little coffee and head out to race site
Event warmup:

Quick dip in the water before the start
  • 38m 36s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards

I apparently just take it too easy on the swim. I was pretty disheartened to get out of the water and see a 37min swim time.
What would you do differently?:

Train to swim with high intensity all the time.
Transition 1
  • 02m 28s

Faster than it felt like.
  • 2h 46m 30s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.15 mile/hr

Course was 57 miles, so that's an improvement over last year. Last 1 hour was riding into a pretty good wind.
What would you do differently?:

Executed the bike well. Not too much
Transition 2
  • 03m 19s

Had to use the bathroom before going out to run.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
  • 1h 35m 15s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 18s  min/mile

Solid run up until mile 11.5 and then I got really bad side stitches. This caused me to stop and try to stretch them out, but to no avail. I jogged the last 1.5 in quite a bit of pain. Cost me a couple of minutes as well.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, ran well.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Obviously poor swim execution.

I need to figure out why I keep getting stitches at the very end of these runs. This has happened in multiple races now and does not occur in training.

Event comments:

Still a great race and the weather was perfect.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

A description of my experiences during my first triathlon. It was a great experience. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This is not an easy task, especially for the “9-to-5er” with family. But you can do it – all without sacrificing your marriage, job or family.
