Comments:

I was nervous leading into this swim more than any other swim. My forearm had been bothering me for a few weeks which really hindered my swimming when it acted up. My forearm didn't start bothering me until the first tun buoy on the second loop. It was manageable.

This swim was tough, though. I got the shit kicked out of me from the very beginning. At times I tried to stay over the cable but got beat up and kept swimming smack dab in the middle of the big buoys. Then I decided to swim out further and still got beat up. It was rough.
What would you do differently?:

I swan the best I could. Very happy with this. 1/4 amount of swim training as previous ironman with the same exact result/time.
Transition 1
  • 07m 35s
Comments:

You had to run forever in this transition. I was swift and efficient. They just made me go far :-)
Bike

Comments:

I knew about 20 miles in that this wasn't going to be an awesome ride. My legs were sluggish and tired. I stayed in the small ring up front the entire ride. On the second loop I stopped at all aid stations just to keep my mental status good. I knew I wasn't feeling fantastic and pushing it would have just made me miserable. I still tried to ride at a comfortable hard place but my legs just weren't there.
What would you do differently?:

I really have to dial in on my nutrition. It has always been a weakness of mine. Also, I'm pretty certain that the 100 mile run 9 weeks before has something to do with my legs being tired.

I can't complain. I enjoyed the ride but I just couldn't put out an A game effort here. I know I can do that bike better.
Transition 2
  • 07m 53s
Comments:

I did a complete clothing change here. I'm okay with the amount of time spent here.
Run
  • 5h 43m 28s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 13m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Well, I didn't have my run mojo leading into this race and it really didn't show up on Sunday but I expected as much. I was just happy to get off the bike an have enough time to walk the whole thing if I wanted to.

My ankles and feet didn't like being on the road so long. I didn't get nearly as many road miles that I had wanted to nor did I do much running after MMT. Still, I had a great time.
What would you do differently?:

Um, I would definitely need to devote more training to the ironman and not wing it like I felt I did. Things just didn't come together for me but I had a great time.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just a general disinterest in doing the ironman after MMT made it difficult to do "well." Of course I wanted to do it but I think I need more time between races. I also need to really get my nutrition on the bike worked out.

Event comments:

This is a great event. The spectators are amazing and the course is fantastic. I would certainly suggest this race to others. Maybe I'll go up and spectate next year and be one of those crazy fools on papa bear.

I thought you were amazing, especially so close to MMT.

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

I have Bontrager Race Lite wheels. I was looking into renting Zipp 303's or 404's for race day for Ironman Lake Placid. What time will I save?

I am running Boston in April and Ironman Lake Placid is in July. I have been told that it is ambitious to think about doing an IM so close to a marathon due to the recovery time. Any suggestions?

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

If you are calm while everyone around you is losing it, you probably don’t know what the hell is going on.
