Hermosa Beach, California
United States
International Surf Festival
66F / 19C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 15m 9s
Overall Rank = 545/783
Age Group = M50-54 Swimsuit
Age Group Rank = 57/87
Pre-race routine:

Ran 20.24 miles the day before. Probably enough said there...
Event warmup:

Got in for a couple minutes and acclimated...first time swimming more than a half mile without a wetsuit.
Swim
  • 1h 15m 9s
  • 3520 yards
  • 02m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

I've swum 2.4 miles in 58F temps and chop in 1:17, so I was shocked by my time today. Didn't do much specific training for this, but all my long pool swims suggested something closer to 1 hour. Long run definitely took a lot out of my kick the last half mile, though. Pleasant swim overall...until the last half mile, then I started to get a bit fatigued and to feel the chill a bit.
What would you do differently?:

Not do a two mile ocean swim the day after a 20+ mile run...
Post race
Warm down:

Walking in sand on the beach helped...calves were really tight.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of specific swim training. Fatigue.

Event comments:

Major institution...over 1000 entrants (most in swimsuit division).

Soon after I got married, I decided I needed to get motivated to work out and focus on getting back into shape. I could barely jog a quarter-mile without needing a walk break.

I first decided I was going to "do" a triathlon in 1994. It wasn't until 13 years later, in 2007 that I actually did. Why did it take me 13 years to get to the starting line? The swim!

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.

Many people in the triathlon world think they need to just emulate Ian Thorpe to have a faster time, or have a similar stroke to Michael Phelps to cruise through the swim. Unfortunately...
