Colonial Beach, Virginia
United States
Set Up Events
Total Time = 3h 55m 19s
Overall Rank = 263/276
Age Group = 31-34
Age Group Rank = 14/14
Swim
  • 53m 37s
  • 1500 meters
  • 03m 34s / 100 meters
Comments:

The Swim course was changed the morning of because of high tide at 0727 - which was just half hour after the race started - so the long leg on the swim was against the tide - which made it slow and hard; my googles were all foggy and had a hard time sighting
What would you do differently?:

get a couple of practice OWS in; new googles before next race
Transition 1
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

Decent run/jog from the transition area to the bike mount location;
Bike
  • 1h 33m 37s
  • 40 kms
  • 25.64 km/hr
Comments:

Had issues getting my left food into the clip - not sure what was going on there, never really had that issue before; my ride time was right in line with what it had been during my training rides, so i'm not going to complain too much - need to work on increasing speed
What would you do differently?:

nothing really - maybe train at a slightly higher cadence
Transition 2
  • 02m 32s
Comments:

I was done by the time I hit this transition - I def. screwed up my nutrition plan somewhere along the line; grabbed a protein drink and guzzled some of that before heading out on the run
Run
  • 1h 22m 39s
  • 10 kms
  • 08m 16s  min/km
Comments:

my run was more of a walk/jog - by the time I hit the run my foot was bugging me and so I took it easy - probably could have jogged more than I did. My second half was better than the first half - more consistent in speed/pace - more jogging as well - had a fellow competitor run with me the last mile to finish together - which really helped
What would you do differently?:

probably get some more bricks in before a race
Post race
Warm down:

walking and stretching

What limited your ability to perform faster:

PF in left foot caused some issues on the run; middle toes on my feet went numb on the bike (need to get this checked out - not sure if a saddle issue or something else)

Event comments:

Like most Set-Up events I have raced/volunteered at - very well organized and run

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

This past spring I realized a few of us were heading in the wrong direction physically. We were getting together for poker games and kids’ birthdays, but that was it.

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.
