Pre-race routine:

Woke up shortly after 5:30 and had some PB on bread on the drive down to the race.
Event warmup:

None, I just sat around and chatted with Mike.
Swim
  • 22m 43s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Glad I got through this okay, since I've really been slacking off this summer and have barely gone swimming at all. Sighting seemed fine too. I tended to be a bit wide, but with a counterclockwise course, that was expected since I tend to pull to the left. Never felt that I was drastically veering off course though.
What would you do differently?:

This wasn't too far off from what I expected. I'm always slow even when I'm in shape. The fact that I was in the bottom 20% and not the bottom 10% was actually not too bad for me!
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

This went well. I had good placement for racking, so I wouldn't have expected it to take too long...
Bike
  • 39m 6s
  • 12.3 miles
  • 18.61 mile/hr
Comments:

Since I knew my run would be slow due to lack of training, I figured I'd gun it on the bike for fun since it was a pretty flat course. I've been slacking on biking lately too, but was able to pull down a pretty decent pace regardless.
What would you do differently?:

I liked this course, and plan to sign up again next year to see if I can break 20 mph if I were to actually train for it. Given my current fitness level though, I was happy with this result. Also, not to be picky, but the AUTOCALC keeps listing my pace as 18.6, but it actually calculates to 18.9...
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Nothing notable here really....
Run
  • 40m 24s
  • 4.4 miles
  • 09m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

I didn't want to make myself miserable with my lack of training, so I just took the run at a relatively comfortable pace. I did have some issues with chaffing, my shoe on the right foot and my time chip on my left ankle that was getting uncomfortable by the end.
What would you do differently?:

I'd like to come back and do this course again. The run was pretty flat, so if I were in better shape, I'm curious what kind of pace I could have pulled down. Also, as with the bike, AUTOCALC is not entirely calculating my pace correctly, as it should have been 9:11...
Post race
Warm down:

Just hung out with Mike and chatted by the lake. It was a nice day out!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training. My logs are completely up to date, and it's pretty obvious they're sorely lacking. I have a HIM planned for next year, but I've clearly decided to make this year a slacker one.

Event comments:

I like Max Performace races a lot and usually do three a year. They're very organized and I feel like they really care about everyone's safety, which is nice!

Congrats on getting out there and enjoying the race/day.

I was super close to doing this one (knew a bunch of folks who were there), but didn't want to monkey with my race this weekend too much...

I heard it was terrific, and it sounds like you had a great time!

Matt

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
