Front Runner
Total Time = 1h 46m 7s
Overall Rank = 47/318
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 8/30
Pre-race routine:

Ate 1/2-PB sandwich and 1/2-banana en route. Arrived at 630am and picked up packet. Racked fairly close to bike out/in (small transition area). Took time getting dressed and set up.
Event warmup:

Soley consisted of arm/rotator cuff stretch/warm-up.
  • 13m 13s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 30s / 100 yards

Swim went very well. I went out a little hot but did so on purpose as swim is my best event. The buoyancy from the wetsuit is awesome. I did not feel warm or cold. I believe I was 3/30 in AG.
What would you do differently?:

A little faster out of the water.
Transition 1
  • 02m 38s

Still took it a little slower than necessary.
What would you do differently?:

Speed it up.
  • 50m 38s
  • 16.5 miles
  • 19.55 mile/hr

I AM THE WORLD'S WORST HILL CLIMBER!!!! I did pretty good on the downhills and flats. As usual, passed pretty well on flats and downhills, couldn't knock people off on hills and got passed a fair amount. Felt decent physically.
What would you do differently?:

Transition 2
  • 00m 23s

Pretty good.
  • 39m 17s
  • 5 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile

Pace was decent. It was a little erratic.
What would you do differently?:

Maintain higher pace at race end.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking and minimal stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not sure if it had an affect as I felt OK, but I only got about 4hrs sleep. Lack of mental toughness as well as lack of hill fitness on bike. Also need some better run fitness but overall not too bad.

Event comments:

Race was better run than had been expected from statements from BT members.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

If you’re reading this because you’re still not sure, sign up for just one triathlon – a short sprint.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

A description of my experiences during my first triathlon. It was a great experience. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.

While most do not think about the actual vector breakdown involved in the cycling stroke and where the power is applied in detail, when you finally do think about it, things become clearer.

Maintaining a positive attitude and a sense of priority will be my keys to success. Before summer fades into fall, I will be a Triathlete and eager to race again.
