Pre-race routine:

get up early and drive to the Start. Coffee courtesy of a good sister! Walked around, set up transition and walked around some more. Visited the PP to get rid of coffee. Bus to swim start.
Event warmup:

Haha, not much warm up! Off the bus, pull up the wetsuit and in the water for about 1 minute then start.
Swim
  • 22m
  • 1100 yards
  • 02m / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim started well and went well until I started to get a little tired, then my navigation wasn't doing so well. I seem to pull harder with my right arm so ended up heading downriver several times. I started out sighting every 5 strokes and doing well but ended up every 3 and still having to correct The race organizers had put buoys out to mark where they had mowed the weeds and that was a big help.
What would you do differently?:

More swim training would be a big help here. That and some work on my technique.
Transition 1
  • 06m
Comments:

It was hard to walk out of the water with all the mud, seaweed and concrete, then up a gravel path. Ow ow!! My feet aren't used to that! I just stayed relaxed and calm and ended up out faster than I expected. I love the transition area at this race, split rail and log racks adds to the rustic and friendly feel. These are the only racks of any race I've done that are high enough to hold my bike up.
What would you do differently?:

Not much,
Bike
  • 48m 22s
  • 14.4 miles
  • 17.86 mile/hr
Comments:

I learned a good lesson at last weeks Titanium Man Oly. Our coach had told me for years before he passed to "don't race the bike" Of course I always did and then burned out on the run......every.......time. So today, I rode well within my fitness levee and it really paid off in the run. No dogs chasing us today was a big plus. The first mile of rough chip seal had me thinking that maybe I shouldn't have entered this race but then it smoothed out and was a very nice. Smooth enough that I hear my bike sing.
What would you do differently?:

Leave my aero bottle off. I didn't put anything in it and it rattled the whole way.
Transition 2
  • 03m
Comments:

again, I took my time here, stayed relaxed and was done faster than expected
What would you do differently?:

not much, it was a muddy run in and I was careful
Run
  • 44m
  • 4 miles
  • 11m  min/mile
Comments:

I must have drank enough on the bike so when the PP showed up about a mile into the run, I was a very happy triathlete!! After the good ride, I was able to run the whole course except for the hill up to the paved road. I kept a good comfortable pace and passed someone! This almost never happens with me so it was pretty fun.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

walk around, eat Japanese catered lunch.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I havent' put in the training time this year so had fairly low expectations. That and a back injury have limited my fitness level. I pretty much "participate" at the races instead of race anyway so it's not so bad.

Event comments:

This is such a fun race! Small field and such a warm fuzzy feeling. The RD was a bit stressed about getting started on time but it worked out fine. The lunch was great and there were Taiko drummers for entertainment. Last year was the first year and one of the race instructions was " if you see a buffalo, run the other way" This year there were buffalo behind fences. This one was more organized than last time but still a great race. Their goal is to grow the field to 100 next year. I'll be there!

My favorite part of the RR is "it was more organized than last year but still a fun race." BUT still a fun race. Fun day today, and nice RR.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
