Looks like the Cobb County part of the trail will be closing for a while in early 2014.

Or did everyone already know that but I'm just finding out?

Kind of a temporary bummer. Some of my best ever runs have been in the winter on SCT when there's not another soul around....

Well that's a big bummer even though I pick up the SCT just before the caboose at mile 14. Thanks for the heads-up.

I heard that on the radio this am. I normally start off at Florence Road, but guess I'll head to the caboose at Hiram per McQ to catch it now. Long lonely windy cold in the winter! Thanks for the heads up.

Work has been going slow (very) but steady on the bridge at mile marker 2.3ish. I think they've replaced about 15-20 boards in the past week. Sure hope they don't overwork themselves at that rate. The upside is that it isn't closed off, just signs put up on the approach about bridge repair.

has anyone been over there recently? I just got a powermeter and I'd look to go to the SC to do an FTP test. Is it still torn up? what if i parked at like mile 4 by the bike shop?

If still under construction, can anyone recommend a good place to get an uninterrupted FTP test in? Thanks.

Seems like the SCT is always under repair!

Great place to ride, though!

The SCT is a horrible place to do an FTP test. Even the 5 min test. Unless you're out past mile marker 15. I have always found that Columns drive is a great place. Straight, flat and minimal turnarounds.

YMMV

X2 on the Columns Drive for FTP test. That's probably the best place to go in Atlanta for a good time trial ride. Very minimal interruptions and stoppage needed there.

I've heard good things, but I've never been there. Where do you park? and is there some kind of route?

You can park at either end of Columns drive but the one at Columns / Johnson Ferry will require you cross a very busy street (it does have crosswalks though). Parking is $3 (?) cash that you put into an envelope and drop in a box. There's a removable tag on the envelope to put on your rearview mirror or dash.

The route is a 5 mile loop down a fairly flat residential road in a very nice neighborhood. There are marked bike lanes but you will encounter some runners and the cars, for the most part, are cyclist friendly as they are used to the cyclists out there. I also believe there is an offroad / mountain bike trail at the other end of Columns (southwestern end).

??? I've never seen it but have only parked over there once or twice. Are you talking about further down and not directly across?

Directly across, from either side of JFerry walk/ride/run on the sidewalk towards the river and you'll find the sidewalk under the bridge. Good for when its busy.  I rarely drive all the way down Columns now to park, always at the Jferry lot.  Its right in the middle of the Columns loop and the trail up to the dam and that parking lot can be a pain.  Shoot me a pm if you have more questions I'd be happy answer em'.  oh, annual passes are available at jferry lot for 25 bucks, maybe a better deal than paying 3 each time.  Hope this helps.

Looks like the trail is completely open THIS WEEK ONLY. Other work they're now planning looks like construction/closings will extend all the way to Labor Day.

I think it's great there's money to maintain this resource. It's too easy for recreation facilities to fall victim to budget issues and SCT is something many, many triathletes have trained on since it opened.

Are there detours around the construction on the SCT? I have a few people that would like to ride there Saturday. If you start at the trail head, can you get around any construction or does anyone know where you can start and miss the construction.

It has been a while since I was out - but the last time I rode there it was free and clear from the Florence Road crossing (around mile marker 11). There were no detours around the construction up to that point.
