Subject: Training through pregnancy
I've recently established that I'm pregnant (VERY early stages) and am interested in how to stay fit and active through my pregnancy. I've done a search for previous threads and it seems there are quite a lot of people on here who have continued training through their pregnancy - this is what I wanted to hear!

Does anyone have any specific or general advice on what to do/not to do?

I'm hoping to continue all 3 sports, although I'm clumsy enough on the bike at the best of times, so I'll probably switch to the turbo fairly early on. I currently do pilates for core work. I know core work is important, but can I keep doing what I've been doing, or should I switch to a pregnancy pilates class straight away?

I've found a local personal trainer who has a specialty in pre- and post-natal training, but she's more gym/strength based, so I wondered if anyone with knowledge of triathlon can offer any advice?

Also, if anyone has any suggestions of good books/websites that offer good advice I'd appreciate it.

Ask your physician what he/she recommends.

Many BTer have been able to s/b/r throughout their pregnancy and yes most ride the trainer. Hopefully they will chime in here.

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

Most OB's will say you can continue to do what you have been doing pre pregnancy as long as you keep the HR lower and do not overheat.  I would agree with what Kathy said--ask your doctor about any specific limitations he/ she may have for your workouts during pregnancy.

Yes, the trainer is better since your center of balance shifts so much in pregnancy.  There are some women who can run right through the entire time and others who find they need to stop running because as their babies grew they were less comfortable.  Swimming is generally allowable throughout since it is non weight bearing.

Congrats! I stopped running when I was pregnant because my pace slowed so much and my ego wouldn't allow it. I REALLY regretted this -- it took a lot of time to get back to where I was pre pregnancy. I did walk/ swim/ lift weights, so I wasn't a total slug, but I strongly encourage you to keep it all up, even when your workouts are slower/ shorter/ less intense.

(I'd also advise watching the weight gain. I gained 50 pounds and it sucked to lose it)

Congratulations! With my doctor's approval, I was able to continue "running" till the week I had my last child. It did wonders for my mood and energy levels, especially when I ran in the late afternoon when I was likely to get grumpy and sleepy. Post delivery recovery was quick for me.

Congrats. I continued to train but did slow down. I swam right to the end. Biked to about 36 weeks upright on my oldy mountain bike. And stoppped running probably around 28 weeks i just felt like a walking duck. But I walked instead of my runs. My doctor recommended to keep up my activity level as I usually would, not to overheat and stay safe.

Congratulations!! What an incredibly exciting time!
I exercised during each pregnancy and adjusted based on my limitations. For example, I had to stop biking when I started knee-ing my mega-gut (also so difficult to breath w/ baby hogging lung space) and had to stop running when it became so uncomfortable. I also maintained a HR of <150bpm (each doc has their own opinion about this). There are so many great things you can do for cross training if needed. I know several who ran marathons while pregnant (like, 8months, I find that crazy). Personally, I have achieved MANY PR's since having kids. The thing I found equally important was support and stability. As our ligaments become lax, we need to support our bodies especially spine & FEET/ARCHES. Also important to avoid valsalva maneuver. Your doc will have lots of great advice. You're going to do great! Pregnancy is such an incredible experience!!!

Thanks everyone. I'm hoping to continue doing as much as possible, although obviously it just depends how everything progresses. As I said, it's still early days, so fingers crossed it sticks...

Bizarrely, the way the health system works here, I'll be seeing my GP in a couple of days, but there's a reasonable chance I'll never have any contact with an OB. My understanding is that as long as I don't have any of the risk factors it'll be midwife care all the way through. While I don't have a problem with that, it's unlikely that many of the midwives around here will have a special interest in exercise during pregnancy!

I already use heart rate training for my long runs, so I was planning on using that for all my runs (ditching the hills and the track) and just doing what I can. I enjoy swimming, so hopefully I can do that all the way through.

I'll be interested to see how it all goes in terms of my race plans. I had a HM pencilled in for April, which would be entertaining to do - it allows late entries, so I can see how I feel close to the race. I'm guessing my iron-distance plans will be on hold though (as my husband's training partner pointed out - its the first chance my husband has not to be "chicked" by me!)
