Pre-race routine:

Chaos, swm start had changed to another area, not sure where the buses were for giving the bags to.
Event warmup:

None sat quietly away from the mass start.
Swim
  • 58m 58s
  • 3344 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started out behind the madness but didn't understand the course, thought that we were supposed to go out around the 1st buoy then head south along the coast. I kept going out past the 1st buoy (Looking at the coral & fish), not really getting to understand what I should be doing.
What would you do differently?:

Know the course
Transition 1

Comments:

poor work here. From the time I got my bag to the exit it was just too slow. Forgot to open the bonk bars and food on my bike & had issues opening them because hands where slippery from suntan lotion

Bike

  • 16.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Totally flat, well a couple of minor false flats, but the wind from 25KM to the turn back across the island was crazy strong. You had to be in areo the whole time.

Special needs was a problem they couldn't find my back and had to locate it myself. Penalty official almost took me out 2 times. He was overly aggressive in giving out drafting penalties I also couldn't tell if I had a penalty and went to the
What would you do differently?:

Not have IT band issues 6 weeks before the race.

Run

  • 26.2 miles
  • 13m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot, then it rained, then rained some more. Had stomach issues, and needed a porta potty, but there were only 5 on the run course (yeah I counted). Once the stomach issues cleared I was able to get back to running.
What would you do differently?:

not sure but something.
Post race
Warm down:

Sat. Looked for food, post race was disorganized to say the least.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

IT band issues 6 weeks before the race

Event comments:

I'd do this race again because the venue is beautiful. But the race itself was a disorganized at times, example we were told that we needed to bring our race bags to the T1 area the day before the race, but once we got there, we were told to take the bags to the finish area. At the finish really no food, gatoraide, water and bananas. Be warned about the east side of the island winds they are something else.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

If a heart patient can do these things, then so can those of you who haven't been split open like a fish and sewn back together.
