Any one do it?

I filed the paperwork with the court the other day. My mother was a very cruel person, often using my name in a mocking manner. I always told myself when I was an adult I would change it. 44 years old, and finally did!

Not a huge change: Suzanne to Zanna(friends/coworkers have called me Zann for years) but a good change

I haven't, but I know people who did it for similar reasons to yours.

Congratulations!

I changed my name when I was in my early 20s ... they also made our lawyer send letters to my bio father. He didn't respond so they went ahead with it. Congrats!

Technically I did it when I got married...

Name changing always reminds me of the friend's episode when Phoebe changes her name "Princess Consuela Bananahammock" but I think your change was a much better and logical choice Mother's do a number on us, sometimes, don't they.

I don't know much about it, but this thread reminds me of something kind of funny that my wife told me recently.  Where she works, there's a guy who's changing his name to his "15th century French name" or something.  His new name is going to be something like Jocelyn LeSquirrel.  The funny thing is that If my name were Jocelyn LeSquirrel, I think I'd want to change it to something like John Smith.

In Canada, or at least in BC, when you get married you don't have to legally change your name. You can just assume your spouses name. This means that you don't change your birth certificate. Also, I believe that you can legally use either name in this case.

I changed my name when I got married (I am a guy btw) as my wife and I decided to hyphenate our last names. Given that I have one of the worlds most boring last names, it was my idea to do it. I can't say that a lot of my family on my dad's side was happy about it but the accepted it. We had to go to the court together and fill out the paperwork together to get it changed legally (new Social Security card and everything) which was a bit of a hassle but we went on a really slow holiday and had the world most entertaining court clerk helping us fill out the paperwork. The she walked it back into the judges chambers and 2 minutes later it was signed and official. a lot easier than I thought it would be.
