Comments:

My first start on half-marathon distance. Very hard and difficult race for me, i'm rally disappointment with the result ... much below expectations.

There was a plenty reasons of this failure ;)

But, from the begining - I was ill for the eight days a two weeks before race (antibiotics) so i was very weak. I made only half of trainings planed for the two weeks before start.
Day before start was very stressful, i have some troubles in work so i did not sleep well.

Start day - In the morning I did not eat too much, only tomato soup. Sleepy and upset went to the starting point ...

10KM in good pace, 5:30 - as it turned out later - too fast :(
First problems started on 17KM, my heart rate jumped sharply upwards - I had to slow down rather than accelerate - the whole plan for nothing... I knew about the route, but the amount of hills suprised me a little.

Last 2KM it was disaster, pace 7:00 (yes... it's not a mistake), a lot of people overtook me, which was terribly demotivating...
On the finish line I was barely stood on my feet.

What would you do differently?:

Next time, if the disease is going to happen before start, I will not compete - it's pointless.

Sleep more day before.
Eat and drink more before start.
I will take a fuel belt with me, or at least one power gel.
Post race
Warm down:

long walk to the car...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

disease, fatigue, not enough food and drink ...

Event comments:

Very good organization!

Nice work Jack, it's really difficult to get through a race of that length when you've been sick in the days leading up to it.  I'm sure your next one will go great!

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
