So there is a new(er) llifeguard at the Y where I swim. He was apparently giving the woman in the lane next to me swim instruction while on duty - that didn't bother me - we were the only 2 in the pool. Next week he starts offering some swimming tips (I'll be the first to admit my swim skills could use some improvement). Next week he tells me he's raced Kona, including last year. Through someone I work with who volunteers at the Y I was able to get his last name. So I check - can't find any results. So today he's there and I ask him for his finish time 9:17 he tells me - so I check - no one with any name close to his finished in that time. So COJ call him on it or let him continue his lies? (oh, and he also apparently did 4 tours in Iraq, former Marine).

As long as he doesn't wear a finishers t-shirt I'd leave him alone.

Wait a sec. This sounds familiar. Bring your I phone to the pool. Say hey lets have a look at the pics. We need closure on these issues.

Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa.

Let's just get his name and masacre him quickly and painfully.  The other marathon pirate / bandit thread has taken a turn down a path that we might not be able to recover from.

He obviously did Kona in 9:17.  I mean, he's giving swimming advice at the Y.  Duh

Just flat out ask him!  Don't go down the road of the other thread about the marathon.  We may never get resolution to that one but for this one there's hope

This story could have a tragic ending if he lied about his lifeguard training/certifications to get his job.

With a resume like that, why is he working as a lifeguard at the Y?

I've raced Kona too. Just not the same day they have that big race thingy and all those crowds. I finished in 4:27 because I was tired and wanted to take a nap.

I get a kick out of guys like that, assuming it is not true. I have known one since college. My group of buddies includes a number of former military and college athletes, so we like to share our stories. Anything we have done, he has done better--recuited by the Navy SEALS (SPC 4 REMF in National Guard), offered a D1 Hockey Scholarship (was HS team manager) , lots of football scholarships (was a 1 year walk-on at lower DII school), captain of the state champion football team (was special team back-up), 3:20 Marathon runner(never run a mile under 7:00) , lots of hot girlfriends (who we have never met), many amazing job offers (still works same mid-level job), etc.. It is fun to see what he will come up with next.

Hopefully the YMCA knows its requirements and has copies of his Red Cross Certification on file.  They will also find out quickly if he has it or not at the monthly required trainings at a YMCA.  I said hopefully!!!!  :-)

I have a friend who's very prone to exaggeration.  She said she got accepted to an MBA program and law school to start in February (neither of which do), when she actually doesn't even have a BA/BS degree.  She also claimed that she drove herself home after a hysterectomy (no way a hospital would release her without a ride home).  I didn't believe her when she told me she had cervical cancer.  Sadly, it's true.  I felt awful doubting her but given her past claims, I didn't really believe her until she went through chemo.  When she actually had the hysterectomy, I kind of called her on her previous claim.  I didn't want to kick her when she was down so I wasn't too hard on her.  Turns out I wasn't the only one questioning her stories; another friend had the same reaction.  Sad that some people feel so small that they have to inflate their stories to feel worthy of attention.

I'd say more likely he didn't do versus bandit. I somehow think IM organization would eat him alive. ...bothers me that others would buy the story...think I'll ask him Thursday when I swim

Just a thought: Isn't there a 70.3 in Kona every year? Maybe he's really, really slow!

The doctor says not to run again. Ever. Needless to say, I’m not taking this very well. Can I recover from this? Where should I go from here?
