Subject: Who's open water swimming?

Just wondering if anyone has braved the cold waters in southern Ontario recently?

I am planning on racing at Milton and wanted to get at least one open water swim in before June 1st.

If anyone can update on the water temperatures in an around Milton/Oakville/Burlington, it would be appreciated!

ETA just stumbled across this website with some tips for cold water swimming:

No open water swimming here yet (in Niagara). I am doing Woodstock on May 24th, I am going to Indiana this oming weekend and staying on a small lake. Going to check the water temperature there and might try to get a swim in. Otherwise I think race day will be my first OWS for the season.

I dipped my toe in the Ottawa river over the weekend whilst my daughter played in the sand. Decided I may wait a little while until I take the big plunge!

18 days to the first OWS of the season in Ontario! Sun June 1st - 2XU 1k, 2k, and 4k just north of Peterborough - Sandy Lake in Buckhorn. Gonna be chilly and fast! Very shallow, clay bottom, great viz. I will be there with 70.3 and IM clients racing. My nutrition client 14 year-old Trinity Arsenault has already been in Lake ON for the first acclimation swim of the season. She is working to set a World Record in early Aug as the youngest to cross the lake, traditional rout: 51.5km Niagara-on-the-Lake to Marilyn Bell Park. I am pace swimming for her.

Looks like things are supposed to warm up in another week, and stay there; night lows above 15C. Shallow lakes are quick to warm but also fast to lose heat at night.

Yikes, I hope the next few weeks bring some warm temps. I'm usually OK in cold water, but that is getting a little too cold for me.

went for a swim in the St. Clair River Friday night. Was 53deg. The first couple of minutes were tough, but once the cold water stopped flowing into my wetsuit, it was OK (kinda) for a 30min swim.

I figure Welland will feel like bath water compared to that. But I did learn that if you can, get in and get that initial shock over with first before the race starts. My first 2 minutes were pretty useless until I got used to it.

Morning everyone - Welland is going to be fun as always

Event News (taken off series' website)
June 10, 2014 – Water temperature as of today – 19.5C/67F
June 9, 2014 – Water temperature as of today – 18.5C/65F.

It sure will be warmer than Woodstock and a little cooler than Binbrook

One thing I am keeping my eye on is the wind... as it looks like it is going to be windy

Oh well

have a good week - and a safe race

Jean

Hello everyone I did an OWS in Lake Simcoe with a few friends last weekend and it was really cold. We swam for about 15 minutes.

It looks like Welland is shaping up to be much better.

Jean we have the exact same wetsuit !!

I think mine may be a bit big for me as I bought it used and am on the lower end of the weight range for the size.

Happy training!

Phil

Hey Phil - that is funny - mine was free

It is full of holes (patched off course) - I like it though

I will be in the 45-49 AG so hopefully we are close on the racks so we can have a candid with the MSC 'pic man'; will look for a 'same suit' guy in the line up before we commit

Happy but safe training

Jean

I'm west of Sudbury. I know that there's a group in North Bay but don't know of any around Sturgeon.
