Lake in the Hills, Illinois
United States
66F / 19C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 41m 3s
Overall Rank = 121/339
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank = 12/35
Pre-race routine:

This was my 5th year of doing the race so I do not get all worked up any more. Woke up, had something to eat and drove over to Costco. Got my bag all set and rode to T2 for body marking. Set up T2 and rode to T1.
Swigged some Infinite while setting up T1 and got into the bottom of my wetsuit. I was number 274 so I had about a 20 minute wait after the first swimmers. Saw my wife, who wished me luck as I got my suit all situated. The time trial start moves pretty quickly and all the sudden, I was at the line.
Event warmup:

None. Just riding from Costco to T2 to T1. About 2 miles total.
Swim
  • 15m 17s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

The past 2 years I was at 12:57 and 12:02 for this swim. Lack of swim training really showed up here. Felt good otherwise, although the wind kicked up a bit of chop. Nothing major, but I am used to this lake being flat calm. Time trial start which cuts down on traffic. I thought the course was a bit longer this year. Seemed to go pretty far down the backside of the lake. Garmin read .56 miles.
What would you do differently?:

More swim training. I have it in me to be around 12:30 for this course.
Transition 1
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

Pretty good time. You have to stuff your wet suit in a bag and I always struggle with it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, 2 minutes is about right.
Bike
  • 48m 59s
  • 15.5 miles
  • 18.99 mile/hr
Comments:

Again, lack of bike training. I have been really unmotivated lately and am looking forward to a triathlon break after next week. I felt I was really flying on the way out and my Garmin confirms this. Then we turned around and hit the beginnings of the cold front coming in with gusty winds. They were not as bad as later in the day, but enough to shave some time. It was a good effort considering. I usually can do 20-21 mph on this course, but not today.
What would you do differently?:

More bike training. I spent the winter prepping for the Cary HM as I wanted to break 2 hours (and I did) so I was off the bike trainer and pool for a while.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Good T1 for me. I was right by run out, so once I racked my bike, I slipped on my socks and shoes and got going.
What would you do differently?:

1 minute is a good time for me.
Run
  • 33m 31s
  • 4 miles
  • 08m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

I still have some leftover run fitness. I expected to be around 33:30 and that's right where I came in.
What would you do differently?:

I did not do a single brick workout this year. Still have trouble that first 1/2 mile off of the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some food and drink. Met up with my wife. She grabbed my swim bag and I packed up and rode back to Costco. Home by 9:30.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training this year. Need a break.

Event comments:

This is a really well run race. I will probably always do it since it's so close. Extremely well organized and for $50, a bargain.

Nice job Rick! I don't how accurate the swim is here, but it was longer than normal. The bike was tough that day too!

Thanks Ben. By site, that last turn buoy looked farther down the back side that previous years.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.
