Pre-race routine:

I had toyed with doing the new sprint in Cambridge last weekend but didn't realize it was on Father's Day and so I decided early this morning to do this one. One of those waking at 5:30am moments and telling myself that if I peek through the curtain and it's not raining - I'll go. My only goal was to push the pace and see what happened. I purposely didn't wear my Garmin.
Event warmup:

Paddled around a bit in the lake. Some dynamic stretching.
Swim
  • 16m 49s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

The water was perfect and I thought I'd do well on the swim but I didn't seed myself properly and it was beach start so I felt I had to wait a while to start swimming and then couldn't get through the bunch to swim at a decent pace. For some time I felt boxed in by breast strokers and worried about getting kicked in the head. Then I finally got free and swam off course so had to zig zag back. I don't know if I've ever experienced so much contact on a swim before. Just too many women bunched in together.

Transition 1
  • 00m
Bike
  • 46m 28s
  • 20 kms
  • 25.82 km/hr
Comments:

I've put in less than 20 hours on the bike and even that was a stationary bike in spin class so I had NO expectations aside from it not being easy. The funny thing is that I'm almost always last on the bike even when I do train so what difference could not training make? Apparently not much! I rode the same distance last year at the end of the season (well trained) at 26.23km/hour.

It's a pretty course. A couple of decent hills.
What would you do differently?:

Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 30m 6s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 01s  min/km
Comments:

So ya... in my haste to get running I totally forgot to put on my race belt.

Run was decent. I'm okay with the pace. It's been so long I forgot what a tri run feels like. But this is a decent pace for me at a tri - actually it may be a PR.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around drinking water, collected my food. Looked for Anne and Ken

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training

Event comments:

Totally spontaneous decision and I couldn't even find proper race attire but it was so nice listening to tunes in the car on the way up and then being out in the sun in the pretty countryside. A good way to spend a sunny morning.

Total time 1:38:54. Finished 402/511 Overall, 163/233 for women, and 26/36.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.
