Palatine, Illinois
United States
Salt Creek Rural Park District
77F / 25C
Total Time = 1h 38m 38s
Overall Rank = 103/351
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 15/26
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4:30am; had a cliff bar. Left the house right around 5:00am and rode the bike to the race site, about 4 miles away. Weather was a bit drizzly, but the temperature was nice. Sipped perform while I waited.
Event warmup:

Swam about 300 yards in the water, to acclimate. First major OWS without a wetsuit. Water was pleasant, between 75 and 78 degrees, and felt great.
  • 17m 42s
  • 900 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards

Decent swim overall; I am slower without a wetsuit, but still averaged around 2:13/100.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, if anything. My swim is my worst sport, but this was solid.
Transition 1
  • 01m 45s

Good transition. Went without socks. T1 was 9/26 pace. Good clean transition.
  • 40h 08m
  • 14 miles
  • 0.35 mile/hr

Here we go. I love the bike, and *finally* I could race without holding back on it. THIRD in my AG, 25th overall. NP was north of 200 watts, but the numbers are off a bit due to a PM issue.
What would you do differently?:

Push it harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s

Stopped to put on socks - should baby powder them to make it easier.
  • 37m 18s
  • 4.5 miles
  • 08m 17s  min/mile

There are some fast runners in my AG. Yikes.
Post race
Warm down:

Kept walking, cooled off in the water spray, had some food, relaxed. Great day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My performance was probably 95% of what I am capable of. Very happy with it. Probably could have pushed the swim and bike more.

Another year, another excuse in missing the Ironman 70.3 Lake Stevens triathlon.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

The triathlon made a lot of sense as I could fit the training around early mornings and other times that wouldn't eat too much into my family time. Things never go completely to plan do they?

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

A description of my experiences during my first triathlon. It was a great experience. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.

If you are calm while everyone around you is losing it, you probably don’t know what the hell is going on.
