Congratulations on a great first tri, Sam. That is an outstanding time for your first one, especially on a mountain bike! But, it is a PR. Nowhere to go but up.

Great job on your first race!!  If you're looking for a decent road bike for not a lot of cash, there are several bike shops here in Denver that have used ones.  I'm sure Boulder has its fair share of shops with used ones too, I just don't know where they are.

In any case, glad you had fun and hope to see you at more races in the area.

Great Job, Sam! yes you are allowed to mark with side walk chalk, duct tape, balloons, flags, street lights, or what ever takes your fancy. I use a very brightly colored unique towel and note the number of street lamps I have to pass.

One thing I always do after setting up my transition area is to calmly walk the swim in, bike out/in (to the mount line) and run out/finish. While walking i try to visualize what i'll be doing during the race and noting any non-movable landmarks that stand out (i like to use street lamps). NOTE non-movable - that fancy colored bike or towel next yours may not be there when you arrive ;-)

Here's to the next race!!

Great job, Sam!! That is fast on a mountain bike!! Wow! Don't worry about the swim. As you get more experience in open water, it will come. I still hate the first 400 yards or so. It takes me a long time to get into my groove. Sometimes that wave catches you just right too.
The important thing is you finished with a smile on your face and have gained some experience. Now you can apply it to subsequent races.
Nicely done. Be proud and find your next race!

Good to know!! Sidewalk chalk is going in my transition bag next time!

I also only walked to my transition area from one direction so that's another big learning point for me. I can't thank everyone enough for the bits of knowledge that have come from this community. Thank you one and all. I can't wait to see what a difference a year makes...

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
