Chattanooga, Tennessee
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
70F / 21C
Overcast
Total Time = 12h 02m 18s
Overall Rank = 880/2349
Age Group = 45-50
Age Group Rank = 117/274
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:40. Drank smoothe and half bagel from Starbucks in the hotel. Kim and I hopped in the Escape and headed downtown. We spotted a parking spot on the side of the road and grabbed it. We walked the rest of the way down and saw the lot beside transition was open, so I jogged back and drove to lot (that was my warmup).

Sipped gatorade and had 1 gu before the swim
Event warmup:

Nothing, but the jog back to the car.
Swim
  • 1h 02m 9s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Fast swim with the current. Hardly any contact with such a wide river. Some chop and drank some water, but not too bad. Really wish I has worn the wetsuit, even though the water temp was perfect not to wear it.
What would you do differently?:

Wetsuit was optional, I should have worn it. I would have easily gone 55 minutes. Was fighting nerves. Kept too far left of the middle of the river and did not get the optimal current.
Transition 1
  • 06m 33s
Comments:

.4 miles according to the garmin. Everything was good, nothing unexpected.
What would you do differently?:

Should have used the porta, because I had to go
Bike
  • 6h 03m 9s
  • 116 miles
  • 19.17 mile/hr
Comments:

All the fuss on the 4400ft of elevation was over rated. All the hills I have been doing paid off huge. This course seemed easier than last year and was 4 miles longer. Enjoyed the downhills and recovery.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I could have hammered a little more. I had to pee twice which cut some time off the actual bile split with was 5:58.
Transition 2
  • 05m 16s
Comments:

Stopped and handed the bike to the volunteer and ran and got my bag. It felt a little slow getting going, but wasn't.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, was good going out and ready to run.
Run
  • 4h 44m 51s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 10m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Have been practicing a 5/1 (run/walk) and feeling real good the past 6 weeks. Went back down to 4/1 (as I planned all along) for the race, and it paid off big. I stuck to it the entire way, never walked when I was supped to run, except through the aid stations. I think it would have been a 4:30 at Florida.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I only used the porta once, my splits were pretty consistent.
Post race
Warm down:

Was all alone in the finsh chute, so Mike Reilly said alot about me. It was awesome !!!!!!

Event comments:

Overall, I enjoyed this better than IMFL. Kim did not as a spectator and sherpa.

Great race!  Nice bike split.  What % of the field do you think used wetsuits?

Thanks Joel. Andrew Dollar said around 450 used them. It was so short, I don't think I would have over-heated, but would have benefited at least 5-7 minutes.

Often it makes sense to race slower in order to finish faster and at the same time have a more enjoyable Ironman Triathlon experience.

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

If a heart patient can do these things, then so can those of you who haven't been split open like a fish and sewn back together.
